    System Enquiry for work

    Hey guys

I know it's a long shot, but can someone take a look at this for me. We need to replace 6 systems at work as they're getting long in the tooth, and some point before the end of the year for tax purposes.

Could someone from Scan take a look and see if they can come up with a system competative to Dell's prices that I can offer as a comparsion.

Basic system specs are E6550, 2GB RAM, Basic graphics card (Dell offer HD2600XT, maybe older tech for better price/performance??), 160GiB HD (or 80GiB if it makes the price competivative) running Windows XP Pro. We don't need monitors or any kind of onsite warrenty.

    EDIT

Ok to save you guys some time and effort, the following should work as an office system?? How much extra to get someone to put it together for 6 systems?

    LN19908 Samsung SH-S202J/BEBN 20x DVD±RW ±R DL Writer IDE Black Oem £13.59 £15.97
    LN19274 Intel Core 2 Duo E6550, S775, 2.33 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, Conroe Core, 4MB Cache, Retail £88.99 £104.56
    LN9709 160GB Samsung HD161HJ SpinPoint S300, SATA300, 7200 rpm, 8MB Cache, 8.9 ms, NCQ £27.69 £32.54
    LN12200 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-5400 (667), 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12 £24.99 £29.36
    LN18912 Abit IP-35E, iP35 Express, S 775, PCI-E (x16), DDR2 667/800, SATA II, ATX £50.89 £59.80
LN16382 Microsoft Windows XP PRO Edition SP2c- (Release 2) OEM - Single Pack £70.49 £82.83
    LN20477 350W Silverstone ST35F Silent PSU 120mm Fan Dual +12V £24.99 £29.36
    LN17382 Gigabyte GZ-X2 Black Case 2 x 120mm Fans, USB2.0/Firewire/Audio I/O without PSU £24.39 £28.66
    LN17052 256MB XFX 7600GT 'Fatal1ty' PCI-E(x16), Mem 1400MHz, GPU 560MHz, 12Pipes, Dual DVI/HDTV SLi Passive £46.76 £54.94

We don't need monitors, though I'm sure a cheapy keyboard and optical mouse wouldn't go amiss. I've tried using the 3XS system builder but I can't come close to Dell's approx price of £479.00 ex VAT. Payment would be normally be via my bosses credit card.

    Re: System Enquiry for work

Will they be used for any kindof 3d work or just ms-type office/email? And what kindof res output will they need for ur monitors?
    Also is DDR2-667 good enough?

Logitech OEM 250 keybd and MS optical mouse £5-6 each are sturdy and comfortable to use

80-160 gb hdd differences are £3 or so?

    Re: System Enquiry for work

I'm confused, the case isn't alumium AFAIK, it appears to be a budget plastic job. DVD burner is for convience tbh, as at least one person will need a DVD burner for their work.

The graphics card is because it's a quiet, passive cooled model at a reasonable price, mostly as future proofing for Vista tbh. Monitors are standard 17" jobs, running at 1280 x 1024.

aBit board was down to the 1333FSB processor, it's a cheap, reliable option.

I'm going to bang on about my recent purchase, someone will eventually listen!

    10 x HP Compaq Business Desktop dx2250

My thread is here - It's time to update my office - advice appreciated on buying 9 new workstations.

I ended up buying one more than I needed as a spare. One has been up for three or so weeks constantly.

single core, dvd reader only, 1gb so doesnt fit the bill here but for some it would be a cost effective workstation pc coming bundled with xp pro, they adv cashback too so depending how easy it is to get that then u get free windows over compnent costs.

    Lucio
I still wonder what is the main use of these PC, as 1333 bus may not show you any advantage over the E4600? If your main concern is office type work then stick with the ATi cards as they are reputedly having better 2d image quality. Also that 76GT will generate a fair bit of heat inside the case. 2600 pros might offer a better choice?

The core requirement wasn't mentioned in the first post. RAM is cheap and can be added as can a DVD writer. From Lucio's post, at least one was really needed.

Obviously there's better kit out there

was clearly mentioned before Lucios original post was edited, I know as I read it and was first to respond with questions!!

    Anyway
You dont know what RAM is inside each machine before it arrives, then u suggest to mix and match? I don't think that would be the best approach unless minimal budget is the main concern. If its SOHO or self finance project then fair enough but this is for corporate use and the units required to be of decent spec. (still dont know the main uses tho!)

    Re: System Enquiry for work

By core requirement I meant the number of cores the CPU had to have

You can use any online tool to find out what RAM is in there. I didn't suggest mixing and matching, just adding more RAM. The machines could arrive on the Monday, the RAM can be ordered that same day and be installed next day. Anyway the post wasn't for us to nit pick over minimal details, it was to provide a few suggestions.

If you're right, well done. If I'm wrong, them I'm wrong, I really don't care. I'm offering my ideas.

I've PM'd Lee who said he's fowarded it to the System Builds Manager to take a look at. I know competing against Dell is hard, but I think that I've picked out some good value for money components and it's just a matter to see how the build fee rates against Dell's hidden shipping fees

Of course, the alternative is to point out to my boss that a) I could in theory build them and b) Wouldn't it be nice of him to let me add my system to be to the company purchase and claim the VAT back
