    Reason to wait for 8800GT

Expreview.com - Extra Hardware News Report! » Blog Archive » [Comparison] 8800GT’s new stock cooler is cool n’ quiet
The new one also have a slim body but the fan goes larger. The original one is 65*10mm, the new one is 75*10mm(diameter*height).
The biggest change beside the fan size is the fan RPM. The old one have an awkward fan speed: 1459~4333RPM (default fan speed 1640RPM, full speed 4333RPM). In full speed the fan did not bring us cool air but noise.
The new 8800GT have a very gentle fan, full speed is only 1664RPM, almost the same as the old fan’s default speed. And it’s default speed is 744RPM, lowest is 646RPM.NVIDIA finally get rid of the noisy problem.

Dunno which version I have, but my Gainward 8800GT is pretty quiet

Either that or when I'm playing games my sound is turned up so high I can't hear anything

Re: Reason to wait for 8800GT

Update - Nvidia appear to have denied the report Fudzilla
Updated: According to our sources Nvidia hasn't changed the reference cooling and doesn't even plan to do so. Our sources also claim that Expreview.com just managed to get their hands on Leadtek's own 8800GT design which uses an improved cooler, similar to those we saw on XFX cards a while back.
Bit more checking - it looks as though the Leadtech WinFast PX8800 GT GTB Leadtek - We make dreams a reality and the XFX Alpha Dog XFX both have the bigger fan

Sweet, I got a XFX ALpha Dog XXX on the way - although I was planning on maybe putting the AC acceleroS1 on there.

    I guess I'll check the stock fan 1st then.....cheers.

Re: Reason to wait for 8800GT

Mate put on a accelero s1 and his load tems halved. He tie wrapped a 92mm fan onto it for extra cooling so its really cool and the 92mm is on low setting so very quiet too. He did say that the thermal tape used to attatch the ramsinks that comes with it is rubbish so he bought some other stuff and its fine.
