Question Returns Query - PowerColor 1950PRO Fan Loud Rattle

I was half way through writing a message on the scan returns enquiries page, then I remembered you guys give a more personal response if I post my returns query here...

RE: PowerColor 1950PRO with AC cooler LN19107

I've had this card for just over 4 months (having purchased it on 14/08/2007), but the fan on this quiet cooler has developed a nasty fluctuating rattle which is unacceptably loud (and I'm not just being fussy, sometimes it's as loud as if you were to put a wire in the fan). It started as an irregular noise which has continued to become worse over the last month and now is almost constant. I was considering buying a new heat sink/fan for it, but then thought it ridiculous since it's under warranty; and replacing the HSF myself would probably void the warranty? This is the only PCI-E card I own, so in returning this to you I would be without the use of my PC. How long would it take to be processed and returned? Are there any alternatives to returning it and waiting to get it back repaired/replaced?

    Thanks,
    Andy.

have you tried cleaning out the fan 1st ?

they would charge you for return costs if thats all they have to do to stop the noise.

Of course I have... it was hardly dusty anyway with being fairly new. I think it must be the bearings in the fan or something that are making it rattle - if it was a normal fan I'd just replace it, but it's a custom fan for this shaped heatsink; and even if I did buy a new GPU cooler (which I shouldn't have to do anyway since it's developed this fault after only 3-4 months) wouldn't I void the warranty for replacing the original?

Bump again - since it's gone off the first page without a response again; Annoying when you see all the other threads getting answered.

raise an RMA, why waste time, they wont send spares, they only take it back and have it swapped or fixed.

Re: Returns Query - PowerColor 1950PRO Fan Loud Rattle

I was kinda hoping if it was a known fault, they might allow me to buy a new one, and then refund me when they receive the faulty one back... But if it's the case that they wouldn't do anything like that, I don't want to be without my PC for a week or more... Do you know if I was to buy a replacement HSF would that void the warranty? - I was looking at buying this - does anyone know if it would provide sufficiant cooling for the 1950PRO?

See my "silly boy" thread for a similar problem on a x1650Pro card.

    Good Luck !

yeah, I was looking at that.... I suppose I should RMA it - might buy myself a cheap PCI-E card before I do so I'll be able to use my PC while I wait for it to return.

Re: Returns Query - PowerColor 1950PRO Fan Loud Rattle

i fitted the northq vga aluminium fan and sinks to an x1950 pro 512mb and it runs circa 45C under benchmarking 38-40C idle
very happy for 8 pounds or so and its quiet too, much quieter than stock HSF.
