    high temps :(

    hi,

been having a few problems with high temps on my PC.

    Its an abit ip35, intel E2160, Zalman 9700, corsair hx620, ati 3850, 2gb OCZ DDR2 900 ram.

with the zalman on it, i was hitting 62/63 under load (ie playing wow).

so i have remounted it with fresh AS5, stil the same, removed the mounting hardware, remounted at 90degrees to how it was previously and was still hitting 60 degrees.

so now i have removed the zalman 9700 and mounted the original intel cooler and i'm still hitting 60 degrees.

so i'm now at a loss as to why this is running so hot, as i understand it i should be hitting 45 at rull load with the zalman, and i'm no where near that

i have done what i can think of, can anyone suggest anything to me before i ring scan?

    many thanks

    Re: high temps :(

Unless the chip exceeds it's maximum tempreature allowance (60 or 70 degrees check the box) with the stock cooler then I'm not sure there is much you can do.

The Abit boards naturally overclock a little without your approval, you might want to try undervolting the chip and see if that has any effect.

It could be a dodgy sensor. What temptreatures does the bios report?

    Re: high temps :(

45 plus even in the BIOS.

the chip gets to 63 and then wont go any higher, it hits this with the zalman and the intel stock cooler.
i have pics of the spread of the AS5 on the chip and the zalman if that helps.

i use core temp to report the temps in windows, so they shoudl be fairly accurate.

    Re: high temps :(

It shouldn't really be that hot. See what scan say about it but if it's within tolerance you might be stuck with it.

In which case you may want to look into lapping the chip as it may be slightly concave/convex and this not getting the proper contact that it should.

Make sure you are fitting the coolers correctly of course but I'm sure you are. As long as the AS5 is a very thin layer and spread consistently it will be fine.

    Re: high temps :(

i may have the AS on a bit thick, but even so the temps shouldnt be that bad.

i shouldnt need to be lapping the chip, surley its a return job if the chip wont work with its supplied cooler?

    Re: high temps :(

If intels maximum tempreature for the chip is 60 degree's and it goes over then yes. If it's under their maximum operating tempreature with their cooler then technically it does work, thats the problem.

    page 76 of this
    intel specs

says 73.3 degree's is the maximum.

    Re: high temps :(

What are your ambient case temperatures? What's the airflow like? All the shiny heatsinks in the world won't do anything if the airflow and ambient temps are too high.

well, with the side of the case of its as bad.

with the side on i have 2x80mm fans sucking air in, and a single 80mm fan sucking air out (and the PSU)

the case is a coolermaster wave master

Are you ruinning the latest BIOS?
Bios updates just about always recalibrate the die/core temp sensors.
I wouldnt have thought you are getting a true reading tbh. (probably because of the above).

    Re: high temps :(

yup, lastest BIOS, tried coretemp, abits own software (cant rember the name now) and also tried tat (which wont work)

as the BIOS itself is reporting idle temps of 45, i dont think loads of 60 can be far wrong, and as its been running a zalman 9700 they should be alot lower than that, if it was my duff installation of the zalman, then the install of the intel stock cooler should have lowered them but it hasnt

    Re: high temps :(

All I can think is that the CPU is getting more voltage than it should or it has a poorly fitted integrated heatsink, which is a very common occurence. I agree too that you shouldn't be lapping a CPU ( unless of course you really want to ), you should be exchanging it if that is indeed the problem

    Re: high temps :(

it's a high temp for a low end chip and a decent cooler...have you overclocked it? put too much voltage through it?

even if you havn't it might be an idea to check what voltage is chugging through it.

Are you able to measure the ambient case temperature? What you're saying is all relative and without absolute values it's really hard to say.

    Re: high temps :(

Just wonder, what rpm is the CPU fan spinning at? Possibly a fault with the CPU fan power management (if its set). Try forcing it off in BIOS, see if it spins the fan up more and improves cooling? Other than that some good advices above too.

With power management forced off, mine idles at low 30s C (and thats OCd 50%+) And will only reach 50+C under extreme provocation, ie Orthos testing...

    Re: high temps :(

i'll check the ambiant temps tonight, high 20's would be the room temp, but even so, that shouldnt account for such high cpu temps.

Fan speed is automatically altered by the motherboard, but after 5 mins of gaming i can hear the fan speed up from silent (about 900rpm) though 1600, up to 2700rpm for the zalman.

here is a pic of the base of the zalman after i took it off, it looks like it getting reasnoble contact to me, unloess someone else can advise
