Lack of overclockable memory
I recently purchased som corsair xms2 2x1gb dhx memory. Unfortunately it stinks when it comes to overclocking as it has promos chips on it. Looked on ur website today and you don't have any 1066mhz memory and only the same type of 800mhz. Are you gonna stock any other brands as for overclockers you don't really have anything. I have hit a memory wall with my E8400.
Cheers
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
If you check the following link Here you'll see that we have 3 of the 5 items listed in that section now showing as in stock.
It appears that some of this has just arrived from corsair with the dominator version in stock in quite a good quantity :)
I hope this information helps.
Best Regards,
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
Unfortunately they are rather pricey. Need some overclockable memory at a decent price point.
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
Do you have any Ferrari's for the cost of Ford Fiesta's while we're at it? :)

Ever thought of doing standup your sooooooo funny!
Only stocking corsair who's current 800mhz memory isn't very overclockable. Its great when you get such helpful replies as above. Always seems to be a comedian on forums these days.
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
CellShock are guaranteed Micron D9 chips and overclock very well - good prices too.
I won't post a link here - but if you google for the part # 'CS-2221550' you will probably find what your looking for at around £90 ;)
Crucial Ballistix would probably do the job too.

You're missing the point entirely ;)
Many other manufactures have RAM at a lower price point, with higher performance in clocked systems. While I've nothing against Corsair RAM, it can be incredibly expensive for some of the better stuff compared to alternatives from other manufactures.
Its a thing which crops up often - a real need to stock other RAM.
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
atmadden, what did you manage to get the DHX set overclocked too? :surrender:
I really do need this set to overclock to atleast 900 any more would be a bonus (just ordered some but it has not arrived yet ). If it's not going to happen I might aswell send it back when it arrives and order something else.
I was tempted by going elsewhere for the memory but as I always shop at Scan it seemed silly. I don't like paying £8 postage on items when it only costs a few quid to send them, the main reason I shop at Scan, is the free delivery (I took advantage of that promo when it was on). I just hope they sort out their selection on Ram soon heh. :telephone:
I am not too bothered by the 1066mhz products, most of them seem to be way too pricey even on other retailers websites. Most of the kits are just manufacturer overclocked 800mhz sets anyway. The problem is the lack of variety in the 800mhz section. Some budget G.Skill sets can be bought on other websites for even less than the XMS prices on Scan but are actually under-clocked 1066mhz kits. I dunno, more selection is definatley needed if you ask me.
Custom PC claims they overclocked the budget XMS set from Scan to 970mhz. Thats not too bad for the price, but if cheaper sets overclock more but can only be had from other retailers... Looks like I will have to part with ridiculous postage charges.
:angst:
Other than that though, Scan should :rockon2:

atmadden have you loosened the timings to 5-5-5-18?
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
I have some XMS2 CAS 4 and the max "stable" I can do at 5-5-5-15 at 2.1V is around 470.
And still, there are moments the system gives up. I have been able to boot at 486 but never found stability. It's the first time I buy a famous brand for ram and it's the last time I try Corsair.
I was scared about compatibility at the time I built my system so I played safe.
It works fine but it's not amazing, and most other brands do better for cheaper.
I will never understand why SCAN do not stock other brands.
Who would go and pay £300 for DDR 1200? Almost no-one. And that's why 306Maxi people want ddr 800 that can work past 1000 or more. The premium to get micron d9 with Corsair is just absurd.
They just want to make money.
I also want to add something slightly off-topic. The SCAN rating.... You put the maximum to my ram and it does not reflect what most people would think. It used to be true for the first batch that had D9s but I would give it 3 silver stars for reliability, that's it.
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
Hey Nickaal, that doesn't sound to bad actually. Are you running 1T or 2T?
I read somewhere this memory can default to 1T sometimes, but when running in 5-5-5-18/12 in 2T mode, thats when the overclocking fun begins. I think your right to stop at 2.1V, I hear anything more and you need active cooling and most of the time it doesn't gain any more performance anyway.
Yeah, Scan should stock more 6400. Mostly from OCZ, G.Skill, Crucial, GeiL and more Patriot, to name the ones that come to mind lol.

Unfortunately this one has been 'done to death'.
Scan simply wont stock other RAM.
I prefer OCZ and its a real annoyance buying all my parts from Scan then having to go somewhere else for the memory. (although i bought some el cheapo 667 sticks the other day for a build).
I do though as i dont like Corsair RAM. Its nothing special.

I am running at 2T, didn't try 1T on P965, I think it won't work at all.
As for 5-5-5-18 I tried that too and 2.2V also but did not improve anything, as Blitzen said this is the maximum it can do.
I tried various other combinations, but 457 at 5.4.4.12 is stable while 450 at 4-4-4-12 was sometimes rebooting. I am quite happy with that as my E6300 reaches 3.2GHz but as I said at 486 (3.34GHz on CPU) I was getting errors under any cpu intensive tasks and guess what, it was the ram!
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
also id love it if scan would have other brands other than a large amount of corsair. I think not having this forces others to go by from competitors.
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
The whole scan stocking other RAM argument has been said many times before, they believe corsair is the best there is so won`t stock anything. I have to disagree with that, many other brands are just as good and perform as well if not better for less.
I have a supply of OCZ DDR2 sitting around, which is far cheaper than the corsair ram and as good performance and stability wise.
Re: Lack of overclockable memory
Just my 2p but I got CAS5 xms2 (budgetey stuff) to CAS4 timings up to 900mhz from 800 stock. I didn't think that was too bad actually :). 450mhz on an e8400 is going to be fast.
I though corsair ram was up to 2.1v max and anything above that just decreases efficiency as it gets converted into heat or something.
I've had OCZ memory but it needs more volts and is less reliable / stable, just in my experience.

I can only get it stable at 804 which is dire. Upping the voltage and loosening timings makes no difference.
