    Faulty Samsung Spinpoint T166 500gb?

Anyone else have this? I'm pretty confident it's something wrong with the HDD.
On occasion the HDD will make a short stopping sound before it whirrs back into life.
This will usually happen when reading or writing data.

For a example, when opening a folder it will make a short stopping buzz and then whirr back up before any icons are displayed. during gaming the game will completely stop until it whirrs back up and then it starts again. This has not lead to crashes yet but feel that a new HDD should definately not be making this kinda problem, especially a new one.

HD's will power up and down when unused for a while if the OS says so (or if it goes into standby), however when in use it shouldn't.

It could also be a power issue, but unless you're using a really bad brand (like Q-tec) then its unlikely as HD's don't have a huge power draw.

Just to say that I did buy this from scan in case anyone is wondering.
Anyways, it is happening while in use. Though I'll see if there's any HDD power save on, I'm sure there isn't.
Also using a Seasonic 500w psu.
Duo core E8200, 8800 GT, 2 GB corsair 8500 ram (1066 mhz) two samsung spinpoint hdd's (not sure if 2nd one acts up) and a DVD rom drive. 500 watts should fine for this setup I figure.

Check the cable connections, if they are sound then backup your important stuff right away just in case the drive controller chip is failing.

Do you get the sick scratch/scrape/click noise? Typically Hitachis made this on their way to stopping completely. I wonder if Samsung use the same controller now as there has been a few threads on Samsungs dying like this recently.

No click but scratch/scrape noise sounds about right. Back ups are good, i made sure of that
So who do I contact? Scan or Samsung since this is only a month old.

i've got a drive that sound exactly like what you described, it's a samsung hd501 though. I've got another which i've backed-up onto so i'm just gonna see how it goes, it's been fine for about 2 months now.

anyone happen to know the warranty on these drives?

btw, i've rma'd before as the sata connector broke off but not with scan (who i bought it from) but with samsung's manufacturer, rexo Rexo
they were really quick, too about a 5 days between me sending it and getting a replacement, you can give them a call on 02086050581 too

Gunblade you can contact either as its under 12 months, depending which is easiest or u prefer.
Although it's probably quickest to deal with Rexo unless ur in easy commuting distance of Scan.

Re: Faulty Samsung Spinpoint T166 500gb?

Just an update, for anyone who cares, that I haven't heard any strange whirring noises after i turned off power save. It was set for every 20 minutes.
Problem is as someone said it shouldn't turn off when I'm using it so I'm still not sure. Gonna have to continue and see if i hear it again.
