    New build PC

Hello, I'm looking to build a new PC and I'm a little out of date on whats good and whats not. I have actualy asked scan tech support to look over a proposed build that I was interested in buying from them. They haven't replied though, maybe their tech support doesn't answer such questions..
Anyways I have made a few changes to the original and wondered if any of you here can tell me if its a viable build or if I've made any mistakes that would make baby jesus cry ;-p

Also not quite sure about my Mobo and GFX card choice....I'm hoping that I've picked components that will be superb now and with the option of upgrading in future with better processor (quad probabaly) and also adding another sli card.

    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 SLACR, Kentsfield Core, Socket 775, 2.40 GHz 1066MHz 8MB Cache, Retail

This one I assume? How would that compair in performance to the: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, Conroe Core, S775, 3.0 GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 4MB Cache, Retail £101.89 £119.72

I notice slower GHZ and FSB but has a higher cache. What does this mean to me in terms of performance. Sorry I really don't know much about the new processors.

Thanks for the notice about the today only a few items i had already chosen were also on there slightly cheaper.

    Re: New build PC

It depends if you have or intend to use any quad core capable apps. Else at stock the 6850 would be faster as its core speed is faster.
However reading around you see the Q6600 overclocks readily to 3.0GHz and beyond so for a small additional outlay you get some future proofing, if you are comfortable with overclocking.

    Re: New build PC

    Ok, thanks.

Just noticed that the mobo only states 1333fsb does this mean that its compatible with fsb upto this speed. So the 1066fsb quad will work fine with it. Or does it mean only chip with a fsb of 1333 will work with it. I ask as some of the other asus boards mention more than on fsb on the description.

    Re: New build PC

Its warranted for use with FSB up to and including 1333.
You will find it probably can go higher thru overclocking but its warranted use as said.

    I agree.
    Go for the Q6600.
Its will be far better and have a longer life than the dual core (whichever flavour).

Just because the core speed is faster is doesnt mean it will perform better.
The Q6600 will eat that 6850 alive.

Perhaps I wasn't clear in explaining on NON QUAD capable apps.
For dual core or single core capable apps the core speed will very much be the deciding factor, although the excess cores may take some of the other background tasks.

"and have a longer life than the dual core"
We both agree on and make this point.
And the Q6600 can be overclocked to similar or greater clock speeds as the Core2, should the OP wish to overclock.

PSU is not modular... The 625W Enermax MODU82+ would be enough for 8800 GTS SLi and it is modular, it might be worth a look...

The Enermax is supposed to be a great PSU but a bit expensive...
For cheaper but still modular and SLI capable, try a Corsair HX620

But worth every penny over the Corsair for the build quality alone.
I have been using one of these for 5 days now after using an Enermax Liberty 500W for the last year. Both are exceptional and rock solid under heavy load.

    Re: New build PC

Oh dear, I have already ordered the above items listed with the exception of swapping to the quad core as recommeded. The sujestion about the PSU has come a little too late. Will this cause problems, as from what I had read the corsair PSU's were one of the better and more reliable brands out there?

Does teh PSU i have chosen mean that I wont be able to sli should i want to then? I put on my original specs that I wanted the option to add another sli card and the guyys from tech support said they couldn't see any problems with the items i have chosen.

Oh also swapped the hard drive from the maxtor one to a samsung spinpoint one. As I read on here that although slower its more quiet and reliable.

    Re: New build PC

I've just checked the PSU description for the corsair i have ordered and its got the SLI box ticked. I'm hoping this means I'm ok.

Sorry for asking, no doubt what seems like simple questions. But I'd rather ask than guess, as I don't know for sure.
