Western Digital 640GB - LN22387 query

This is a product query - are there any technical differences between item LN22387, described as the WD6400AAKS RE2, and what Western Digital refer to as the WD6400AAKS SE16?

I'm aware that RE = Raid Edition, but are there any other performance/technical differences? Is it the same drive, but with a 5 year warranty? I assume that LN22387 still uses 2x 320GB platters.

Im pretty sure that both models use 2 platters. It would be a bit weird having a 640gb without 2 platters, the reason for the odd size is because of the 2 320gb platters lol.

I am not sure about the differences, mabye one is just an enterprise edition while the other is mainstream?

I'm convinced that WD do not currently offer a 640GB Raid Edition drive. The only 640GB drive is WD6400AAKS, which is the SE16, which comes with a 3 year warranty as standard.

WD's Raid Edition drives have different model number convention usually using a Y, e.g. AYYS, FYPS, AYPS

Sooooo, I'll keep researching this and talking to myself until Scan or someone else with better info turns up.

Western Digital's product matrix does not show a 640GB RE2 drive. Only the SE16.

I got this today, and I dont know what to think. Its got a sticker for a 160GB WD Sata2 RE WD6400AAKS .. what the? Unless I am wrong. And I am pretty sure this was labelled as RE2 on the Scan site on Saturday, when I bought it.

edit: also shows on WD as 3 yr warranty for this drive so its definately not RE2. And this was the reason I bought it thinking it had 5 yrs, meh.

That's why I'm confused. The model number WD6400AAKS is definitely the 640GB SE16 (2 platter) drive, and there is no WD RE2 model with a 640GB capacity.

What capacity does the drive show as in Windows?

The drive shows 596 formatted, which is normal .. but I have no idea why the warranty label has 160gb on it. Even the invoice shows the same.

Thanks for that Lee, but its alright. If its going to die, it will probably die within the first 3 years

And either ways, its a very quiet drive, much quieter than my WD5000AAKS.

If you want to get your seek time down to something decent, use WinAAM / IBM Feature tool etc. to set the AAM value to 254, as they are shipping set to 128. Don't disable AAM completely as it seems to default to the 128 value if AAM is set to disabled.
