The New SCAN Web Site - What do you think?

I just thought of a random idea so sorry if its not worth the time etc. Basicly, if an item is out of stock perhaps you could have amount expected to arrive so say if you ordered 100 units of item A then youd expect that 100 to be in at the ETA date given, you could also add a system for saying how many people have ordered it while its out of stock so for example, Item A is expected to arrive on the first of july and you have ordered 100 in and currently 80 people have ordered one while its out of stock, Person A sees that their could be 20 avalible if he orders now so he orders it, after this person B looks at the item and see's that there is only a few left and decides not to take the chance as he needs it soonish and so looks for an alternative.
Not sure how much effort it would take to implement though so i guess the idea wont be really useful, but its something you can add when you get time :P.

We have made a change to the new web site:

Manufacturer Search etc Filter is back :)

We are still making some slight tweaks so please bear with us guys

it used to be nice to use, simple, small, quick to load... i.e all the things the customer wants

now it is overly complex, a lot more demanding on hardware, arguably more difficult to navigate/use...

why cant companys invest in making websites smaller and simpler than becoming more expansive and resource hungry

I think the comment that they have ruined their website is abit over the top really.

The site looks different and for me it doesnt run slow and loads nice and quickly.

Its only difficult to use the first few times in my opinion and now with the function of searching for manufacturer back, its even better now.

S, in my opinion, all it takes is abit of getting used to and you wont be complaining about it, I like the new look, it looks modern and fresh.

I have seen other companies, who I wont name, change their website and it looks and feels worse, for me this isn't the case with SCAN.

Website changes are like marmite ..... some people love it, some hate it.

And some of us that hate it have reasons. I don't see my view changing unless there's some fairly radical design changes.

The website still seems to be pretty slow..

I notice that when u click on a Category, eg (Cables).. It will show every single product. Which takes a long time and probably puts a fair bit of load on your database.

You also include an "sub-section" option to restrict the products (View Selects, View All etc).
Why not just show a couple of favourite products.. or no products and allow people to narrow down their search using the sub-section menu you provide..instead of showing every single product.

Overall i think the site is still rather clunky.. it's not very user friendly there is a mis-mash of different images, corners edges and spaces gobbling up the space on the page.. which breaks the age old rule of "KISS".. Keep it simple .. I'm trying not to be too negative, it is an improvement on the old site.. you just need to make it easier to use (Less Sections!.. More sub-sections. and criteria to search by)

This is how I struggle to find things in Scan's site:
Let's say I want to buy a monitor.. £150 budget must have DVI, 8ms refresh and widescreen.
In Scan's site you have to click on Monitors LCD TV. wait for every monitor to load. Scrolldown thru loads of results or tick LCD - 22" - 30" and wait for page to load again. Then stare at the screen for a while to work out what actually meets my criteria..

The idea way would be to have something like this..
Click Monitors section.
Enter some search criteria... 22-30" tick, DVI tick, 8ms tick, Widescreen Tick, . £100-£200 tick.. wallop search..wait for a short list of results. It's just so much easier to use.

One of the good features on the main site was to compare different products. For example comparing a Quad Core - Phenom against a Quad Core Intel CPU. With the new site you cannot do that. You would have to open 2 different windows and flick between them.

Also.. one last comment.. (sorry!).. What is with the tabs on the top?.. I never even saw them til i started thinking abotu some feedback. I'm not sure i've ever clicked on them and I doubt anyone else will either.

A few people here complained they had to press an extra button - so we had to add this back.... Personally It was much better without....

try software and then wait for the browser to go mega unresponsive almost die and then have to scroll through a million products? not ideal.

.. How about more criteria for searching?. You put all the lovely detail into the products..

In the tech specs settings..

How about being able to search a product group based on that criteria? :)

Much like you can do on dabs website which is think is one of the easiest sites to find things.

The 'Previous Orders' is somewhat confusing. I think the table details are out of line with each other. Other than that, site seems great. People who are suffering performance issues when loading a website need to either a) substantially upgrade their 10 year old pc, or b) get a better internet connection. Like it or not, websites are beginning to be optimized for broadband users.

However, I think the site could have been designed better in terms of its content layout. There are just too many "bits". In terms of usability, dare I say it, I think OCUK has got the better hand. Also, PLAY.com and HMV.com (less so) are easier sites to work with. I think you've gone down the prettier interface look and not taken the users experience into as much consideration. Having said that, it is an improvement over the previous site, but personally, I think it's only a minor one. Can you tell I'm studying website design? :D

care to lend me £1500 quid so I can do that.. mines 7 years old, thats close enough to 10 years.. I expect performance problems though, bits of it are melted..

Just notiecd the manufacturer search is back - WHOOPEE!!

and theres a drop-down matching product list in the search bar - not seen one of those before.. BRILLIANT!!

easier to spec up my new PC that I will/might buy at some point this year.. I'm still getting used to the new layouts and some of the products have switched categories, wont take me long to track them down though.. my scrolly wheel hasn't had this much use since I last played crysis..

and I just noticed that the 'exc vat' and 'inc vat' have changed colour too.. makes the price stand out better, well done.. whoever did that, they deserve a cookie..



talking about cookies.. it is still going back to the last scan section page viewed when you type scan.co.uk into the address bar after closing and reloading IE7, shouldn't it go to the homepage?

and is there supposed to be something in those sections you click at the top? the pro audio, pro video ones.. tried clicking each one.. all they show is 2 pictures that dont link to anywhere, and the same 3 items underneath.. a laptop, dvd drive and a HDD..

have you guys dulled the colour scheme too it doesnt seem to burn my eyes as much, or is it me going :crazy:

Quick niggle - when i use the hard drive link at the top of the forum the page http://www.scan.co.uk/Legacy/Product...Thumbnails=yes has the "Product has Hexus Review" is a bit low picture

That's strange as the same section using the following link appears fine ;
