    Geforce GTX 280 vs 9800 GX2

    Hi guys,

I may be re raising a port but I haven't logged in for a long time.

I am considering upgraded my video card from a Geforce 8800GTX to either a GTX 280 or 9800GX2.

I have a Dell 24inch monitor so I would need the new card to run games at 1920 x 1200 comfortably.

    All help and recommendations appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Re: Geforce GTX 280 vs 9800 GX2

The fastest card out at the moment is the ATI 4870 X2 version.

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=1-0-94-575-0

This is faster than both cards you mentioned and currently the one to go for.

If you want to get the Nvidia GTX 280 I would wait until it drops to 55nm which is occurring in the next few weeks. It will be cheaper, cooler, faster at stock and have more ability to overclock.

Thanks for that. The thing is I am very much a Nvidia guy. And if I was to go down the ATI route I would have to buy a crossfire m/b etc which I don't want to do. Basically I don't see myself crossing over.

Should I wait for the new GTX 280?

    The 4870 X2 is over the top at 1920 x 1200

Our performance evaluation shows that the HD 4870 X2 only comes into its own when the resolution is cranked up to 2,560x1,600, along with serious image quality; anything lower and it's sat there, twiddling bemused transistors.
you really, really need a 30in monitor to make it worthwhile.
Taken from the Hexus review for the X2 http://www.hexus.net/content/item.ph...=14928&page=14

I'm also upgrading in the next few weeks, settled on the GX280 after reading the review for the X2 as I only have a 24" monitor.

It all depends if you are able to wait or not.

Myself if I were purchasing a graphics card for £250+ and knew that Nvidia are soon releasing a 55nm version with faster stock clocks.

And that it will also be a cooler runner and better overclocker I would wait.

But then conversely people can say if you always waited you would never buy anything.

If I were to buy an Nvidia card now I would buy the newly released 9800GTX+ version. But I am not sure if this is 55nm + version is available in X2 versions or not.

    Aren't the 9800GTX+ a mid-range card?

Yes but you had said you were interested in the 9800GX2

I don't know about the performance numbers game but couldn't you not SLI two 9800GTX+ to achieve a better performance than the the old 9800GX2.

For your Screen and for money you want to spend SLI is not needed the GTX 280 @ £240 is a good purchase.

    Excellent.

Well - I am off to Portugal on Saturday - so when I return the credit card might have to get used...again!!!

What about these new Nvidia 55nm cards that are meant to be coming out - cooler runners etc?
