Feedback on a Proposed System Specification
Hello.
I'm putting together a specification for a system for work. The main use of the machine will be for editing, encoding audio, and managing a large audio library (hence the 1TB hdd). We're a charity so the budget is critical, and is £850 (inc VAT). The specification I've put together is £767.49 including delivery.
Could you give me some feedback on what I could do to improve on the system? (I know there is no PSU, I've already got a new 600W unit that has never been used).
Does scan offer a build service? and if so, how much would it cost to have you build the PC for me.

Re: Feedback on a Proposed System Specification
May be worth asking in the Hexus Hardware area for specification help, where more people should be able to help. http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-hardware/
However Scan do offer their own series of custom built PCs but I can only assume it's not possible to custom build with every component from scratch [It wouldn't be feasible], honestly it is easy if you follow a simple online guide, or get a knowledgeable friend to help - just exercise care when building, but sometimes a little force is required :)
From first inspection the monitor could be changed to something more suitable, 22inch widescreen or similar perhaps ?

I wouldn't recommend creative soundcards for that work.
They're still locked to 48k 16bit aren't they? and their ASIO driver support is poor.
If budget is seriously an issue may I suggest an m-audio audiophile 2496 or an E-mu 0404 (although both of these are PCI not PCI-e and around £50-£70) - neither of which are stocked at Scan because they don't seem to cater for the pro audio market.
RME now have a PCI-e version of the HDSP card but that will blow your budget as is around £300 but is far better suited to the work you need to do.

Gibbo / aghorner.
To clarify SCAN caters for various vertical markets, which are filtered via the links at the head of our site.
1) Computer Hardware
2) Pro Video
3) Pro Audio
4) Pro Graphics
5) Digital Home
Please visit our Pro Audio section http://www.scan.co.uk/Index.aspx?NT=5-0-0-0-0, you will find related products including the M-Audio Audiophile 2496, http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/M-Aud...nd-Digital-I-O.
Granted we don't stock the EMU range, however as we do cater for this market if this is the card you need we can easily order this for you. We have some extremely technically minded "bofs" at SCAN so if you need any advise at all feel free to PM me your contact details and a convenient time we can call you, alternative feel free to proceed with this thread with any queries you may have.
Best Regards
