ScanSure Installation Insurance - Very Impressive

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Scansure/Index.aspx

This is by far one of the most boldest of moves I have ever seen in PC retail. From my own PC retail experience I find it terrifyingly complicated but none the less from a customers point of view.... oh boy you sure have an edge with me. But I cant seem to find costs? how much would this insurance cost for say a CPU or VGA cooler? they can be brittle.

Yes I agree. Scan fail to mention the cost. You'd think that that would be the key fact.

Re: ScanSure Installation Insurance - Very Impressive

    Very interesting!

Cost wise, I would assume it would depend on the item(s)?

If you buy a £1000 CPU the cost would be higher than a £75 one. That would make sense to me? Or it might be based on the entire invoice, etc. etc.

The charge would be based on the products you are purchasing and worked out automatically and shown online on the checkout stage of the ordering process.

Well, it's good to know that should I ever have trouble installing a mouse pad, I can get additional cover for it
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

0iD: Plus weeing in it every now & again does it good
scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.

For the professional mouse mats insurance is a good idea, maybe you spill a drink on your nice new mouse mat or drop a cigarette on it and put a nice burn mark on it so your mouse no longer glides over it..

You never know what could happen and for the minimul charge you have peace of mind that you are covered.

You forget to mention that it is only valid for 28 days. The chances of damaging it during this period are remote or nil. For some items it is OK.

I would say most or 99% install their hardware within this time period.

Re: ScanSure Installation Insurance - Very Impressive

All the relevant information is highlighted through our web site and the downloadable PDF. The cover is only valid for 28 days and the reason why we are offering this is precicely becuase the majority of accidental damage etc does occur within 28 days.

Re: ScanSure Installation Insurance - Very Impressive

    Interesting idea.

It's perhaps worth pointing out what you aren't covered for, though, in case people think this is wider ranging than it is. And there's a few grey areas too.

    • you aren't covered for cosmetic damage, such as damage to paintwork, dents or scratches, so if you drop a heavy HSF and it puts a dent in your expensive aluminium case, you're out of luck.

    • you aren't covered if you failed to follow manufacturer's instructions. That could be fairly wide-open. If the manufacturer (say, Intel) requires the use of an approved heatsink, or even approved thermal pad/paste, and you use something else, did you follow instructions?

    • You aren't covered if you do anything that invalidates manufacturer warranty. Similar issues to the above point arise. And it's a grey area. Intel, IIRC, state that overclocking might invalidate a processor warranty. If so, it might invalidate this insurance at the same time.

    • Any claim arising from abuse, neglect or malicious damage. Well, malicious damage is certainly eminently fair, but exactly what constitutes "abuse" and "neglect"? If you fail to tighten something (like a heatsink) down hard enough, is it neglect? If you tighten it down too much, is it neglect .... or abuse?

    • You aren't covered for theft, loss, etc. Well, fair enough. That doesn't appear to be what this policy is intended for.

    • Any consequential loss. The claim is limited to the value of the component insured, so if whatever happens damages other bits, you're not covered for them. An obvious example would appear to be if you're installing (having bought, with this cover) a watercooling system and mess up to connections, or even if a pipe splits. You'd be covered for the water-cooling system you bought, but not for the rest of the PC if it got fried too.

I'm not saying that this insurance is a bad thing to have, or not worth buying. Far from it. Just understand what it does cover, and what it doesn't ... or might not.

If people think this cover means they can relax their attention to care and detail on installation and this gives them a golden parachute, the above limitations might mean they're disappointed.

All of the exclusions are also clearly explained through the online PDF as has been pasted from.

Yup, though I didn't paste anything. But how many people bother downloading and reading PDFs?
