Question BH10LS30 Won't Play Blu Ray Movies

I have just purchased a BH10LS30 drive (invoice E1399463) but I am unable to play a single Blu Ray movie. So far:-
    - my Q9650 XP64+SP2 8GB GTX280 system will not play them with either the PowerDVD8 that came with the drive or with PowerDVD9 trial - error message = "there is a disc with an unsupported format in drive E:"
    - my Q9550 XP64+SP3 4GB GTS8800 system will not play them with either the PowerDVD8 that came with the drive, with PowerDVD9 trial or with WinDVD2010 trial.

Windows explorer can see files on the BLu Ray discs but that doesn't get me anywhere. I bought this where the Scan description said that Nero was included so I would expect to at least be able to play a Blu Ray movie, even if it is on a cut down basic player.

Since 2 PCs and 2 different pieces of software refuse to allow the drive to play movies I don't want to throw more bad money at the problem. At the moment the drive doesn't do what I bought it for but I am prepared to put effort into finding a solution if Scan Care can help me.

Please help me if you can.

I hope Scan don't mind me jumping in here, but unless you already knew of course, your monitor and video card need to be HDCP compliant to play blu ray movies on the PC.

As above ^ are you connected to your monitor or TV over a DVI or HDMI input, if not then the Blu-Rays wont play.

@Jonj1611 & @Terbinator Thanks peoples - that makes sense - you may have saved Scan many more emails from me
I have a 19" CRT monitor that I run at 1600x1200 so I have avoided getting an LCD monitor because I have not seen an affordable one that can manage or exceed 1200 vertical pixels.
So if I changed over to an LCD monitor that used a DVI input would I then be OK with the likes of PowerDVD & WInDVD?

Yes, but not all LCD monitors support HDCP, even if they do have a DVI input, HDCP is not a given.

Re: BH10LS30 Won't Play Blu Ray Movies

You would need to make sure the LCD display you get is HDCP compliant, not all of them are so make sure you check first, otherwise you will end up with a nice new monitor but one that still will not play blu-ray. Also make sure your graphics card is HDCP compliant, both are needed to watch blu-ray.

    Good luck with it mate

Jon, thanks. I now have a way forward. If ever I find an affordable monitor that can handle 1600*1200 (emphasis on the 1200 vertical) I will buy it.

I know I'm a couple of days late, but I was always under the impression that HDCP was not required for D-SUB connections (such as the one you are using).

BluRay DVD's are usually protected, so they require HDCP to authenticate your not ripping the media. Of course there are a few programs that can circumvent this and allow BR playback on a D-sub, which is useful for older monitors.
