Wondering what SSD to get
Hello, have been looking at SSDs lately and was wondering whether I should get a Crucial M4 or shell out a bit more and get a Vertex 4.
Was just wondering if there'll be any noticeable difference between the two and wondering if the Vertex will be reliable as I know there's problems with the Vertex 3?
Thank you

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
If you want reliability, it will be between the crucial M4 and Sasung 830 which are not sandforce based. Vertex 3 use sandforce controllers which is known for it's unreliability not just linited to OCZ, but also Corsair too. Vertex uses Indilinx Everest 2 which is there own in house controller. I am unsure how reliable they are as it's new.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I have been looking for a new SSD too. I have decided to get either the Samsung or the Crucial, far as I'm aware the difference is they use there own controller against the SandForce and both are really quick.

Actually, they don't! Even though they advertised them as such at launch  (Vertex 4 that is)
They use a Marvel controller with their own custom firmware until they can get production sorted.

At which point you should probably go with the M4. Crucial has good CS.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
there's hardly any difference between samsung and Crucial, I'm not a big fan of marvel, given they did my MB for the SATA III ports and problems have persisted throughout different brands in regards to speed and reliability.
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
The sammie uses an in house controller an arm9 triple core with its own firmware. Since they have been supplying Sony and Apple with ssd products for some time I would reckon they have most issues sorted.
To save some time one of the members has produced a great thread of reviews

This should give you a pretty informed decision.
I have gone for the sammie, its results are up there with the Sandforce and I wanted reliability as well. 256Gb is at £143 for the basic, inc Norton Ghost should you wish to clone your drive on Scan, a very decent price.
Good luck in making your choice.

My ASUS P6P67 Pro motherboards marvel chipset is pretty bad, it's caused me boot problems but once I swapped it to the intel chipset it worked fine.

I have the same mobo and the Marvell controller ceased to work too, annoying thing.
I think I may go with Crucial, I know they have great customer service and their updates are meaningful

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I don't like Marvel stuff either - and personally I went with the Samsung drives vs everything else not sandforce based.
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Any idea on which Samsung I should look at? Sorry for the childish questions but I know nothing about SSDs

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Thank you guys very much, will probably go with the 128GB version

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
How do the samsung's rate on the reliability front?
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Come on, a little effort people - search! :)
The Samsung is one of the top in terms of reliability.
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I haven't heard any horror stories yet. Sammy are fairly unique - they're building the whole thing in house: firmware, controller and memory.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I think that certainly sounds like somewhere to put a bit of money in after the new graphics card then

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Have you looked at the Corsair force 3 120gb ssd's on scan? only £83

Avoid sandforce at the moment, get either the Crucial m4 or Samsung 830 . Sandforce has problems across the bord with unreliability and crashes e.t.c

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Soo there only 1s to go with atm? no others?
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I have a Corsair Force 3 and never had a problem with it and that runs sandforce.
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I'm thinking of getting 2 of them but i don't know because of what i've heard

Is that why you sold me your Corsair Force SSD?
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Samsung 830, hands down best SSD, no issues, excellent performer (and looks nice)!

Old News.
Many of the problems have been rectified with various firmware updates and now there is nowhere near the same amount of issues reported as when they first came onto the market.
I've complete faith in sandforce based drives and currently have 3 in 1 system with another being added in the next 2-3 weeks time :)

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
I'd disagree, even with latest firmware OCZ drives are still failing. Happened to me quite recently.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
So, the Corsair Force 3 i bought off of csgohan4 is basically pants?

Not really. They have a high failure rate...is a little bit harsh to sell you one and slag them off on these forums though.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Don't get anything with Sandforce on it. Jesus Christ what a unholy crapware that is.

Many have been yeah, but not all. Why risk your data when there are still known issues highlighted by respected hardware sites like Anand and our very own members like dangel and myself have had / having issues?
Just get a 830 or a M4.

I have the Corsair Force GT 120GB and never had problems, as I mentioned in my selling post, the COrsair Force 3 was a backup OS drive with a cloned OS just in case my main drive clapped out. The ultimate question is do you have problems with the drive I sold you, if not then it isn't a problem, you still have 2.5 years warranty from Corsair as well for peace of mind.
My comment is a generalisation and I' sure your well aware of the problems OCZ have publicly have? I'm sure many people here haven't had problems with their sandforce based drives, but the fact there is problem previously some people have migrated to other platforms... naturally.
As A previous poster has mentioned firm ware updates have helped with various issues on the platform, and as many know the earlier firm ware versions were the most problematic.
In regards to Demonwar's comments: I simply provided an honest opinion on the sandforce platform and not aimed specifically at Corsair from seeing this problem of this platform in other forums. It won't make a difference if I didn't make my original coment, even worse perhaps, hoping no one notices. I have nothing to hide and the drive is in full working order. Now it would be harsh if the drive was faulty which it isn't. As he has left feedback mentioning no problems, I don't see an issue here.
Just because we sold stuff doesn't mean we can't comment and provide an honest opinion in general of the products either from our own experiances or in some people's cases other's people's experiances/ Consensus

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Left feedback but yet to try it out properly. You now have the GT which is not the same. You know there are issues with the Force 3 so anything could happen at anytime!
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
well again it depends, I did mention sandforce not specifically the force 3, in any case, 60gb is not enough space for me, I need much more than that, hence the backup option
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Sandforce isn't as bad as it used to be, a Samsung 830 is still your best option. Sandforce SSDs slow down over time, have problems if you fill them up entirely and won't let you encrypt the whole disk, the Samsung 830 does not suffer from any of these problems and is a much better all around performer.

Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Seriously thinking of picking up the sammy 830 due to the sand force issues...any. Thoughts in regards to that?

Yes - use the search. I can't count how many times a week this is covered ;)
In short, the Sammy 830 is one of the best in terms of performance and reliability of SSDs currently on the market.
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
As is the M4 from Crucial
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Samsung 830 wins hands down IMO.
Maybe have a little look at the Kingston HyperX if your not sold on the 830.
-
Re: Wondering what SSD to get
Obviously preaching to the choir, but I'd have to go for the Samsung 830 as well, especially with the recent drops in price
