What is the point of the "In Stock" label?

I ask because I've ordered "In Stock" items two weeks in a row, only to get an email telling me it's out of stock.

Both times the email is so delayed that it's then too late to order from elsewhere for the same date.

What is the point of the "In Stock" label when it's clearly utterly unreliable?

It's nothing to do with it unreliable, its more to do with the fact that they are busy and with orders being placed, in store, over the phone and via the website then stuff like this is bound to happen.

I've experienced this myself and even after confirming that the required replacement part was available over the phone I still found that the replacement part was out of stock a few hours after placing the order.

I understand that Scan enjoy a large order volume so items that might appear to be available at the start of creating a shopping basket might have sold out by the time the order is processed. However I do think Scan could do more to ensure that stock levels are updated faster or maybe flag SKUs on the website as low stock levels by maybe using a traffic light type system with green for good stock levels, amber for low stock levels and then red for out of stock. That way we can see stock levels are low when placing an order and possibly look at alternative SKUs where the item we want is not available.

I did, on the second occasion, and was assured it was OK and would be dispatched on the day.

There seems to be a desperate need for a "how many are in stock" counter rather than just a label, like most other retailers.

In the end I ordered elsewhere because it became clear that the system Scan operate meant I could effectively be waiting for ever.

Little bit over dramatic. They are very busy. Good deals or sought after items are going to sell out quicker than any system would display.
