Recommended hard drive for Sony Vaio

As the hard drive has apparently failed - unmountable volume and all the usual fixes have failed - I need to replace it with a 1TB unit
Are any drives supplied by Scan shockproof or are the 2.5" drives effectively all the same

Note the contents - photos etc. - are being transferred to my main computer as I write using Ubuntu with the drive mounted as read only

Re: Recommended hard drive for Sony Vaio

most hard-drives are similar in design so they all have similar force levels stated, so there's no true shockproof drives unless you probably use a SSD drive as these have no moving parts so are not subject to damage from bangs etc.

If you can advise on the Vaio model - I can check to see whats recommended.

However this is for a Sony laptop not a PS4 - is there a thickness option needed or should I just measure the existing one

Check my sneaky edit - I was doing another query on a PS4 question and for some reason it carried across to this

Re: Recommended hard drive for Sony Vaio

Model is PCG-91211M and having managed to recover the files using a Ubuntu Live CD networked to my computer (I had to mount the disk as read only as it was unmountable) and checked the disk - an enormous number of unrecoverable sectors although stated as OK - a new disk is definitely called for

Fortunately - or is that unfortunately - it had already been upgraded to Win 10 so install and validation should be very simple as I assume that the motherboard has been registered somewhere in Microsoft's systems

Re: Recommended hard drive for Sony Vaio

After checking, this laptop doesn't really have any limitations so it can accept SSD drives for much better performance. The only caveat I can see is it might have issues with the larger 12.5 mm thick HDD drives so please steer clear of these types.

    For 1 TB 2.5" drives, the following are recommended ;

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-h...cache-13ms-oem

To note - the Travelstar is quoted as having a 32GB cache - I assume that this is 32MB

Anyway that is the one I ordered

    Oldjim,

Yes it should have said 32 MB not GB for the cache - I've just actually rectified this on the products database so the website should be correct now.

I've just stuck a samsung evo 850 in my vaio as the main boot drive, then plan to rip out the dvdrw and install a 2nd hdd (1tb) for use as storage, as soon as the caddy arrives

The Samsung Evo SSDs are about the best drives you can buy at the moment. Then use an external USB3 drive for large data/backups

Also you will find replacing the mechanical drive with an SSD makes the battery last MUCH longer since they use a fraction of the power. Plus they produce almost no heat.
