    AMD A64 'Venice' chips

Are you guys at Scan going to be stocking these in the near future? They are due for release from AMD on Monday, so I just wondered if/when they'd be showing up on your stocklists, and at approximately what price? I'm very keen to get one as they appear to be far better clockers than the disappointing winchesters.
    cheers

Yeap - we should be getting these in as soon as they filter through the distribution channel and I've already informed goodsin about the change in code on the packaging so we should be creating a new stock code for these like we did the winchester's shortly.

Realistically I would say about a week to 2 after they are released. If we can get them any sooner I'll update this thread with an ETA

what clock speeds will the Venice chips be running at (3200+?, 3500+? What about 3000+?)

also, I thought that the Winchesters were good overclockers anyway?

seems the week 42-50 (S)PAW CBBHD were very good clockers. however, the later ones from this year have been very poor in general. my 3200+ will only do 240*10 regardless of voltages/mem timings. hopefully the Venice cores will be better (early reports from xtremesystems are very promising).

Much appreciated WildmonkeyUK - easy of communication with you guys is the reason you are my no1 supplier of parts

They will stay at the same clock speed, but venice will have improved memory controller and sse3 instuction set. so it is worth waiting for even if you dont need a proc urgently

    Venice vs Winchester

I was planning on buying a 3500+ S939 Winchester until I read this thread. What is the new Venice core? Is it much better? Will it work in a S939 A8N-SLI deluxe mobo, and any idea of costs yet?

The venice core is the new stepping that comes with a revised memory controller and sse3 instrucions (these are custom instructions developed by intel to speed up complex procedures like encoding).

They will also be made using strained silicon, hopefully this will increase AMD's yields and allow them to drop prices. Of course, it should also make them better overclockers

Apparently, updated bios are needed to use these cpu......

with regards to updating the bios, if I bought an nforce4 motherboard (e.g. Abit AN8) and a Venice based chip, would I be able to insert the venice chip and update the bios?

Or when the Venice chip comes out onto the market will motherboards be shipping with updated bios?

    thanks

Any update on this WildmonkeyUK? I have heard on the grapevine that they may not be available til June!!! I find this a little difficult to believe to be honest, but worried nonetheless

YorkieBen - not sure if older motherboards will naturally support the Venice chips, but in theory any shipped after the release of the chip should support it. best contacting the supplier of your motherboard/chip before risking it.
