Not any bother, just a bit of thought, and some investigation

I've done some more googling/digging and have come up with something intresting. The Seasonic 600W has a 5.0V rated at 30Amps. The Tagan you have has a 5.0V rated at 48Amps.

Now, I would say Tagan are being optimistic there, considering that the Seasonic has a considerably higher total rating, and considering that the Tagan rates its total 12V at 56Amps, and the Seasonic at 36Amps, I think tagan must be pretty much outright lying. Unless the Seasonics are incredibly inneffcient, which they're not.

If someone who's more familiar with PSU's cares to prove me wrong I'd be happy, but it looks like Tagan figures just don't compare Volt for Volt, Amp for Amp, when looked at against Seasonics.

I think you need to talk to someone who knows quite alot about these things at Scan ATi, this stuff is quite perplexing.

It could be that your Tagan is faulty though, how long have you had it?

EDIT: Sorry hexus, but http://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/tagan/tg480.htm might be of help to anyone whos trying to figure out tagans numbers.

I'm not confident enough to say I'm afraid mate, after looking at those specs.

Wait and see what the next guy who posts from scan says, but I think it might be worth sending the PSU back, if they're willing to test it for you.

If that Tagan can actually give 48Amps on those rails, and is doing, and its still not enough, thered be no point in buying a PSU that can only give 30Amps.

However, I would be inclined to think that either the PSU is partially broken, or that its not providing the 48Amps its saying it can do. Even when you take into account the fact that Tagans are rated as 70% accurate, that'd still be more on the 5.0 Volt rail then seasonic could give if it were 100% accurate. Sorry I can't help more then that for now

edit: woops, just made the assumtion that you got the Tagan from Scan, sorry to both parties if you didn't, for that assumption. I think someone could give their opinion that'd be usefull, then ATi can either persue sending that Tagan back to its place of purchase, or can start looking for a PSU with a very high 5.0V rail.

    thanks for everything so far

in the current cpc the tagan fails some tests and tends to shut down on full load, but the numbers are really something

the seasonic stability at 84% full load

    i hope thats does it

    what do you think

The numbers, from my investigations, would seem to be really something because they're not true. I've never been as enthusiastic about Tagans as most people are, havn't trusted them so much since that bad batch they made near the beggining, but tbh this has me convinced, that they're not as great as many would make out.

I would think a Seasonic 600W would be enough for you, but I really wish someone else would back me up on that.

Best I can say is go for it, try it(be extremely carefull not to damage it in any way) and then if its got the same problems return it within 7 days under the distance selling act, and we can then figure out a way to get you the required Amps on that 5.0V rail somehow.

Be aware though, to return something under the distance selling act, you must act within 7 days of recieving the item, the item must be in pristine condition, and I believe resellers are allowed to charge a restocking fee. So you might not get all your money back, but it'd be better then ending up with a PSU that's just as problematic as your current one.

Good luck, and let me know how everything works out

They're probably not all that different from each other. But the number of Optical and Hard disks you have is unusually high.

Hopefully the Seasonic will sort out your problems.
