Free delivery for Hexus users - I feel guilty!

Firstly, let me say that the free delivery offer for Hexus users is a superb marketing move. I have ordered far more than I normally would from Scan in the last few months. It's a totally win-win situation IMO. I have bought goods at excellent prices and Scan have received more of my hard-earned dosh.

But, I feel guilty. Here's the scenario: I want to order a couple of SATA cables and the total price is less then a tenner.

a) I would feel bad if it cost Scan £7 - £10 to deliver those cables to me by next day delivery if the free delivery offer was used.

b) I would feel bad having to pay £7 - £10 for postage and delivery charges for a couple of cables that could probably be delivered in a Jiffy bag with a first class stamp.

What's the solution? (Or have I not read some guideline somewhere?!).

Thats very good point.

Is there any way Scan could implement a different delivery option, if you're ordering some cables, or a PC game for example... You're paying 7-10 quid on un-necessary City-Link shipping, when a jiffy bag with a stamp on it is sufficient. Even a Royal Mail SD is cheaper if you're requiring a signed delivery

Unhappy

Hi... about this free delivery..i tried today to sign up for free delivery with scan then i get a message saying sorry you don't have enough posts... well the thing is getting enough time to start with is one thing and another is fair enough if i just joined to try and get free delivery but i joined hexus before the free delivery thing and getting to work out the user id thing took a long time...

when i got the free delivery email it did not mention anything about posts...and i would be a new coustomer with them as i am looking for a new motherboard...i can get it cheaper else where but with scan's free delivery would make it cheaper for me...oh well i might just have to purchase else where.

The free delivery deal is indeed lethal! Looking over my account histroy, from 23/02/2003 to 15/09/2004 I made a total of 4 orders. It was then over a year till my next order on 21/10/2005 when I took advantage of the free postage offer... since then, I've made 6 more orders in 3 weeks spending a lot more than my missus would suggest we can afford I'm sure there are many more like me out there as well, I'd think it's been an incredible success for Scan. The deal basically knocks £5 - £10 (or more for big orders) off the price compared to competitors, so as long as the price was close in the first place the decision becomes a pretty simple one.

Totally agree with you... I've also been on a spending spree 2 decent orders in 2 weeks, stuff which I may not have ordered but the delivery offer secured my business for Scan. I need to stop .

So what's the solution to the predicament of free delivery for low-value orders? I don't really want to go elsewhere. Equally, I don't want to abuse the free delivery option. However, once you sign in on the Scan site, your delivery charges disappear if you have registered as a Hexus user.

Here is my proposal: put a voluntary option on the Scan ordering system for a delivery charge of £2 or £4 if the order value is under £20. That way nobody will be forced to pay for delivery but those that want to are given the option to make a small contribution towards delivery for low-value orders.

I arrived at the figures of £2 to £4 by looking at the delivery charges for the following e-tailers when putting 2 SATA cables into the basket and proceeding throught checkout.

Tekheads: £3.16 (this was the cheapest option, Royal Mail recorded 72 hours)
eBuyer: £2.74
Komplett: £6 (parcelforce 3-4 days)
ocUK: £5 (CityLink next day)
MicroDirect: £2.49 (standard delivery)

Submitting a query to sales is as simple as visiting: www.scan.co.uk - clicking on Support, and then sales... and generally very quick

(Its also free this way )
