leadtek winfast 6800gt tdh - fan ok?

This has just arrived from scan, and a couple of surprises.

Firstly, it's a one slot cooling solution! I thought it was going to be the big two slot one!

Secondly, and most concerning, the fan is quite far off centre. The picture on the back shows the fan as being in the centre of the dust shroud, but on the card I've got it's actually quite a way above the centre, with a portion of the blade underneath plastic with no means to draw in air - is that all OK?

the leadtek gt tdh is supposed to dual slot, the standard 6800 is usually single slot

That is what I thought also. But this is a single slot 6800GT (full product name is PX6800GT TDH) - I think the A400 is the dual slot, the PX6800GT is a single slot. (and the box art has a logo for 'One Slot Fan' as a feature)

The cooler (only) looks just like this:



but the rest of the card looks like the GT.

I bought the 256mb version, and it says 256mb on the box.

I just think it's a single slot version of the 6800gt 256mb - it was just a surprise! I am more concerned about the fan which is off centre like in the picture above. If this is deliberate then cool - I just don't want to fry anything!

(just noticed - the 'one slot fan' thing is a sticker that's been put on the case).

It's almost like someone has taken a 6800gt and stuck a 6800 cooler on it.

edit 2 - except the shroud has px6800gt printed on it as well. I think they just started shipping one slot fans *shrugs*

This happens occasionally with graphics cards. as the cards mature, manufacturers find different and better ways to make their cooling better and as such revert from older ways, towards better, thinner and hopefully quieter cooling methods.

[EDIT] :: I would contact our RMA/returns Dept as soon as possible with the link to that image so they too can see it.

That fan looks very off centre to me, almost as if the axle is broken. Make sure it spins up ok when you install it, if not power down immediatly and rma it.

Thanks for the replies. I emailed Leadtek support and got a reply the same day (*tips hat* - much better support than asus!) where they say the off centre fan is fine.

I blew gently on the side of the fan and it spun on the axis fine. It spun up fine in the computer and I proceeded with gentle testing.

Basically it all seems to work fine.

Temperatures are hotter than my previous card, but supposedly within range. (fx5700 was giving about 32C idle and 40C at load, the 6800gt gives 45-50C idle, 60-65C at load).

I have seen this being done before - apparently by not having the fan centered, its supposed to improve cooling or something...
