hello I am looking at my stuff and wondering, where is the thermal paste? is this with the cpu? or the motherboard? i bought an am2 4600 and i cant find the paste if its in with that, just the cpu and the heatsink/fan

sometimes the heatsink has a thermal stuff on bottom of it
so i dont need to apply paste?
depends if you have and want to remove the stuff thats stuck on heatsink
and if you have some
it will work fine
ok i was not aware that the heatsink came with some already on there. a friend of mine said he had to apply thermal paste. so i can basically just leave it as it is and it will work fine? that makes the process easier! just clamp the heatsink on and away i go? and plug the fan in too!
also is touching a (painted) radiator occasionally and wearing trainers (i'll be stood on carpet, working on a desk) enough anti-static precautions?

Some aftermarket coolers don't come with thermal paste, and many people think that the thermal paste that comes with many coolers is low quality and prefer to clean it off and applly their own.
Personlay I always remove the original thermal paste (if any) and apply some Arctic Silver. You only need a tiny amount. I have had the same 3ml tube for years, and there is still quite a bit left.

If it's a retail chip then the paste is usually in a square on the heatsink - that's the grey looking thing in the picture. On my X2 it was actually a cream coloured square I think.
That's it, nothing else is needed, just peel off the plastic film protecting it and put it on your chip :) This way you also get to keep your processor warrenty. Read it carefully, as I would actually void mine if I didn't use the retail heatsink and paste that came applied :/
The stuff that comes on the AMD A64 CPUs is actually Shin Etsu, which performs better than AS5, so there's no need to clean it off.
As for the earthing question, assuming you're using a metal case, simply touch a metal part of the case before you touch any component.

A painted radiator won't really work...I have been recommended the PSU to touch from time to time.
Only use AS5 if you are OK with replacing your thermal grease at least once a year. There are other solutions that work just as well, but don't require such frequent replacement.Quote:
