Asus P5W64 pro motherboard - Crazy CPU temps

I bought this board from Scan to replace my Asus P5WDH as it looks to be a really good overclocking board that can get high FSB with conroe.

I installed it yesterday but it seems to be reading the cpu temps way too high.

Bear in mind that Im on water cooling, at stock volts and cpu speed the cpu is at 44 idle in bios.??

I was in the low 40's whilst running duel prime at 3.6Ghz with 1.45v on my Asus P5WDH board ??

This is it with 1.375 vcore set in bios and at 3.6GHz ,idle at 60 deg!!? I only just hit 60 deg duel priming at 3.94 GHz on my other board

When playing oblivion its getting into the mid 80's which is causing the alarm to go off and throttle the cpu.

Ive reseated my water block many times, and tried the latest bios and its just the same. Ive put my other motherboard back in for the time being and the temps are back to normal.

Surely this must be considered a faulty board by Scan ? Im hoping to get it replaced.

yeah I heard about faulty temperature monitors on the P5W64 pro... it may get fixed in a bios update or it may get fixed in a new revision, either way you're just going to have to take yours temps with a pinch of salt. Otherwise, however, it is a great board. Enjoy!

Hard to take with a pinch of salt when your temp alarm is going off at moderate overclocks. Also the cpu is throttling over tcasemax of 85 deg.

sounds faulty to me as well, but i think they are all like that from what i can see, my p5b reads high, but not that high. Im also on water and stock volts/fsb etc i get around 40c average using probe/coretemp, anything higher voltagewise and the temps shoot up, even if its only a touch of extra voltage.

Its not faulty , this board shows core temps.Which I think is cool.

I have used a A380 as a case and its help me keep the temps really down.

    Its anything but cool..

using core temp on my P5WDH shows 65 deg with 1.585v and 3.94 Ghz under duel prime.

Using core temp on this P5W64 shows 90 deg withg 1.375v and 3.6Ghz under duel prime.

Changing my case isnt going to change the temp of my cpu cores by much if anything, i have a Lian li PC70 btw.

i'd say it's a bios issue as iv had at least 3 asus motherboards with temp problems which have been fixed with a bios upgrade, asus motherboards are famous for this

Sounds like a BIOS issue to me too. This is relatively common for some motherboards to have incorrect temp readouts. You're best off using a temp probe to see if your cpu really is getting that hot - which im sure it isnt.

If its causing throttling or shut downs then you would hope scan would swap it for you

my current gigabyte motherboard doesnt show anything in the bios at all with regards to cpu temp. The field is just empty. However on the water cooling block it's showing a stable temp of 21 degrees. Probably a BIOS problem, but also perhaps not as serious as you think.

@krackpot, its at 3.55ghz at the mo and the temps are 50c(core temp) , touched teh HSF and if there is something usually wrong with the cpu and its overheating then the HSF is hot and at the moment its not.

It runs without errors when gaming also its on most of the day and it stays steady at what it is. I have 4 freinds all with P5W64-ws and all are reporing the same thing so that said I wouldnt worry

How high in core temp do yours go with duel prime ?

    on 3.55ghz it goes 70c-73c.

I would not worry though , all the people that own this board has the same thing going.

Also the CPU being overly hot would also relect the temps in the case too and I have to say the temps are really good . Mine are 29c idle when the CPU is 51c.

I dont think the CPU is 51c at all , I remember when I put my cpu in and I checked in the BIOS and it showed 46c , noway was that 46c , also I do not think that my CPU would run without errors at 94c , I think the temps were more like 60c.

I have a feind who has coolit and his instead of showing 20c show 32c , you can imagine how bad we must being seeing our temps then

if its reporting core temps your max temp is about 85oC, CPU max temp is 60oC... hope this clears things up

So if mine is showing mid 90's during prime it must be being throttled ? Is there a way to turn throttling off ?

Go into the BIOS and turn off any temperature warnings or change the warning temp up to the maximum it will go
