    XP OEM - qualifying hardware

Quick question about what counts as an essential part of a new system - I'm thinking of getting OEM XP at the same time as a DVD-RW from scan. Obviously I need the DVD-RW to be able to install XP in the first place, but just wondered if this counted as enough of an essential component?

    Thanks in advance,

Kalniel, just a word of advice... The OEM XP licencing (stating it must be bought with hardware etc) is generally considered a technicality of sorts, and there is no means for Microsoft to check if you have purchased the software with a new component. I for one bought my copy of XP OEM on its own from another shop, and I'd be surprised if you could not order the same software from Scan without issue.

Also, just remember OEM XP will only work on the PC you install it on (given you can change the configuration 3 times), so make sure everything is as you want it for the forseeable future before installing it.

Well I am buying it for installation on a new PC that I've built/am building, and it will only be for that PC, so I meet the requirements from a MS authentication point of view. I was just checking Scans own requirements as the product page is a bit misleading.

And changing motherboard makes it a new PC unless the old mobo has actually died.

Buying an OEM myself for a new build, but I'm a bit confused as to this config change stuff. E.g. I'm intending on adding another hdd in a few months time, but does this qualify as a config change? What about for similar upgrades such as extra RAM etc?

scan keep to the terms as MS are a little strict, i dont think they will sell a copy without a recent hardware order, or ordering hardware with it.

In general the only change you need to worry about is motherboard. Installing components that don't require a new installation of XP such as additional memory or a second (or third etc.) hard drive is fine. Re-installing XP on a new hard drive would probably require ringing up MS for re-activation.

Gonzo, thanks, I know it requires purchase of hardware, my query is whether a DVD-RW counts as essential hardware, given I won't be able to install XP without it

At the moment Windows OEM Home & Pro can only be sold with complete systems, however, we will shortly be stocking the new single packs which can be sold effectively with anything you want.

The Media Centre OEM we currently stock is the single pack and as such can be purchased with anything.

    Hope this helps.

A DVD drive is not really classed as 'essential' hardware I'm afraid.

    The list is as follows ;

CPU, Mobo, Memory, hard-drive, and PSU

Please be aware you need to buy ALL of the above to qualify, not any of the above (Wesley)

    Best Regards,

    Best Regards,
Strange - I didn't buy any RAM, but still got OEM XP Home - I was using the RAM from my old system and bunged some spare RAM into it. No questions asked at the time either

You want me to send it back?
