    New Hard Drive won't detect

    Hello all,

Recieved a new hard drive today (250 Gb Western Digital WD2500YS), came to use it and when used in conjunction with my existing hard drive my computer crashed at the windows loading screen.

I disonnected the new hard drive and used my existing hard drive on its own just to be sure and windows still loaded fine.

I tried the new hard drive by itself and attempted to install windows on it, went through the usual process of selecting SATA RAID drivers to be installed from floppy but when it came to actually install windows it said no hard drives could be detected and to check they are connected/powered correctly.

I had a play using various cables but still could not get the hard drive to be detected. Am I missing something?

Thanks for any comments in advance,

    Lewis

    Hi,
I assume you are installing Windows XP if that is the case you tend not to need the SATA RAID drivers, in my case i have not needed them that is to say windows has always detected my hard drive fine.

Have you gone into your motherboards bios to see if the drive is listed in the list of devices?

Also make sure the hard drive SATA cable is plugged into the correct sata ports depending on the make and model of your motherboard you may find you have two sets. Is the drive powering up/ spinning?

I've had a look in the bios and I can't seem to find where it should be listed.

My motherboard is an "Abit A8V 3rd Eye" and it only has two SATA ports sat one on top of the other.

I think the drive is powering up, I'll have to try it again and have a listen.

Usally the drives are listed on the post bootup screen, if not then on the main page in the bios not sure on your motherboard, if it cannot be detected along the line anyware and your previous hard drive works fine you may be looking at a faulty drive, try going into setup using your old drive and with your new drive connected to the 2nd sata port, and see if the drive is listed then

Ahh yeah, the post screen. I'll check that now. And, yeah, the disc is powering up and spinning.

    1. The post screen only shows the existing hard drive as detected, the new one isn't listed.

    2. When trying windows setup it doesn't detect either the existing or the new hard drive.

    3. When trying to load windows normally (existing drive connected to the SATA1 port and the new drive connected to the SATA2 port) it crashes at the loading screen and then goes to blue screen.

I've managed to sort it. It turns out that you need to use a jumper to select option1 on the hard driver (or I do at least) in order for it to work. Now I just have to get hold of one

    Thanks for the help

No worries mate, cheers for the help.

Yeah, it needed a jumper because it's an SATA 300 HDD and the motherboard is only SATA 150 complient. Sooo, there ya go
