    XFX 7900GT - Faulty??

I brought a XFX 7900GT (520 core) in april this year and I think it's gone faulty.

When I have a black background on I see green dots like dead pixels on a monitor but I know it's not the monitor has I've tryed it on another pc.

It can vary from 1 green dot to about 4 green dots and has far has I can tell it's only very slightly artifacting in games, there are no green dots in safe mode but I see 1 green dot when windows load, there are no green dots when I have a wallpaper on or watch a video.

I have tryed drivers 84.21 to the the latest 93.71 and beta 93.81, I've have the latest drivers for Soundcard and mobo and the latest bios for mobo to and still they are there.

Does this sound like a faulty card to you or do you have any more ideas that I can try, oh and yes the green dots show up on a screenshot.

Do I RMA it to Scan or XFX or will Scan rma it to XFX for me

Also Scan is it possible for me to send the card back to you (Scan) and pay the difference for a better card

    Edit:

If it helps any one they seem to disappear and reappear by them self.
Could my nlite xp disk becasuing the problem?

    Games I've tryed:

Call Of Duty 1 + United Offensive = Total fine, no problems at all
Oblivion with HDR on = 1 inch long blue rectangle
Oblivion no HDR but 4x antialiasing on = stretched swords on people
Dark Messiah = seems fine but I do see very small coloured boxes
Company of Heros = seems fine to

It seems temperature related, disappears when it's at 47 and reappears when it gets hot 60-70, I'm going to try a reinstall of windows with my normal xp disk, none nlite version.

Try lowering the core to see if this helps and id recommend giving the fan a good clean (may be dusty and the cooling may not be as efficient as it used to be)

I have the same card. XFX instructed me to up the memory speed from 1500 to 1510 using coolbits (750 to 755 with your drivers I think).

    It worked for me.

I've just reinstalled windows and got it running again

My pc/card is clean as I've done it when I had to rma my board back to you

I will try coolbits but wont that void your warranty I try it on 3D Mark 06 and report back later

    Windows reinstall:

The green dots are still there on a black background

    400/1200:

3dmark06 is fine upto the airship where is flashes red and blue circles.
Oblivion on hdr still shows the blue rectangles but is totally fine with no hdr.

    520/1510:

3dmark06 is fine upto the airship where is flashes red and blue circles.
Oblivion on hdr still shows the blue rectangles but is totally fine with no hdr.

The green dots are still there on the desktop no matter what I do

Any more ideas out there or is it time for rma or new card

Are you sure that the green dots aren't stuck pixels in your LCD monitor?

As for the 1510 & voiding warranty issue, it was the manufacturer that told me to do it, so I'd expect the warranty to be honoured.

I know it's not the monitor, I've tryed it on another pc and it's fine

I've been reading on other forums that this is an early sign of the memory failing .

I've just ran 3Dmark06 3 times at it does it at the same point and on. It starts at the airship bit and on, it's like very quick flashes of red and blue stars and in Oblivion (With HDR On) it does like blue rectangles while occasionally doing a yellow one

Well it looks like I will have to rma it or buy a new one

    Edit:

I've uploaded a screenshot of the Oblivion problem, look top right hand corner -

    Yep, RMA it.

Whether to RMA to scan or XFX, if you go with scan, ask them to check if the replacement's got Infineon RAM as opposed to Samsung.

lol bit hopeful at the end there,

XFX normally make really good reliable cards..came top of many polls such as the PC Pro Awards 2006 for best graphics cards, and mine still seems to be pumping out a good amoung of fps on cod2

, as far as I can tell it only seems to be the HDR side which is playing up

Well if I send it back to Scan or XFX it will be months before I get my pc back up and running and before I see a replacement card from them

I'm also getting a bit sick of ever having a 7900 series card in the first place, with the amount of 7900 threads and rma's I keep seeing

You could just clock it to stock settings to tide you over until you RMA it.

Yeah, I've tryed that, I've at it at 400/1000 and still no difference, me going to take it out again and give it another good cleaning to see if that helps, although I did see some residue next to one or so of the chips near the DVI end

I've just phoned up scan to rma my card and they just said if the card is faulty they send it to xfx who will credit/authorize scan to replace the card and they said that the whole process will take about 7 days or so (so a couple of weeks/months then ).

So there will be me with out a pc for a couple of weeks/months ,there is only 1 other pc in the house which belongs to the GF which is a agp system but only a old amd xp one, which is of no use to me and my work that I do

I know you've heard it before but I work from home and need my pc so I am now faced with either buying a replacement card or just waiting for ever for my card to come back.

or do I buy a new card for my pc , rma the old one and then stick the old one in a new pc for my gf

If I do buy a new card what do I go for, the bfg 8800gts, 7950, ati x1950: or another 7900gt

be carefull with RMA, a m8 returned his 7950GT after we confirmed it had a problem with artifacts in both his and my AB9 mobo, but since Scan/XFX didnt test it in an AB9 they simply said no fault found and now he may have to pay a restock fee to get a replacement
