    Western Digital 500Gb failure

Bought 3 of these from Scan, which arrived on Tuesday and installed them that night as well as installing Vista.

Cue Thursday night and I begin to hear 'click click click click click click'. Thought that the drive couldn't be failing already so rebooted a few times and it persisted, tried opening a file on each Hard Drive until I found an Avi that refused to run and decided this was the offending drive. This was confirmed when I tried to copy data from it and nothing happened.

So obviously this drive needs replacing, but what about data recovery? I'd copied all my photos and mp3's to this drive and as I only had the system up and running for about 48hours before the drive died, didn't have time to copy the data to my external 500Gb WD drive.

I'm kinda pissed as you can imagine, currently waiting for data recovery to finish on the original drive the data was on but failing that I'm at a loss.

Sorry to hear about that mate..never had a WD fail...countless other have on me though.

If data recovery is left up to you there are plenty of places that will do it quite cheaply.

    Hope it gets sorted.

    Yeah, it's one of those.

Thankfully it looks like I'll be able to recover the data from the original drive the files were on.

Still don't understand why the WD failed. Very rarely had HDD failure in my time, the manufacture date is only 30th Dec 2006 and the drive had about two days use max.

It was completely fine, streamed an episode of Lost to XBMC from it, then an hour after I'd finished watching it started clicking.

I've sworn by WD drives for years - I have them in nearly all my systems.

    You have been unlucky

I have the Hitachi 500GB drives in my Thecus 5200 now - but WD everywhere else (and all the HEXUS servers)

Here's the noise experienced for those who might not be aware of what failure sounds like:

    http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/wd250jb.wav

I checked the drives status in Speedfan and it basically said the fitness was 0% and that it had a horrendous rating and needed replacing.

    That doesn't sound healthy

Shame, I have all Western Digital drives too... although I am not fully convinced my raptor is 100% healthy.

Hope you get your data back
