PC World is great these days!

There once was a time when I'd stay well clear of PC World, but that's no longer the case. Has anybody else noted that some of their prices are now incredibly competitive - if not better than the competition?

I also love the reserve and collect from store option - so handy being able to pick up your stuff the same day.

Was on the lookout for a printer recently, and got the HP C8180 - couldn't find it cheaper anywhere else. On the lookout for a new monitor now and Samsung's SM2232BW is £189.99 at PC World - again cheaper than most of the online stores.

What's more, they have a cracking price-match promise that'll match any of the following:
Amazon.co.uk*(excluding Amazon Marketplace), Argos, Asda, B&Q, Comet, Dabs*, Ebuyer.com*, Dell, Evesham Technology*, Game, Gamestation, Halfords, HMV, Jessops, John Lewis, Maplin, Misco*, Play*, Staples, Tesco, Toys r Us, Virgin, Woolworths
    (* Excludes Televisions)
If any of those are cheaper, PC World will reduce its price by 110% of the difference.

Never thought I'd be shopping quite so much at PC World, but it's proving to be very handy. One thing worth noting, though, is that its in-store prices still aren't great. You need to buy online and then collect in store to get most of the discounted stuff.

Prices are more competetive on hardware, software I find no so. And the staff at my local stores are still mostly grunts.

If you know exactly what you want and they have it in stock then PC World are fine. I do think anyone with less than extensive knowledge of PCs should always take a techy with them when they go. I've overheard some of the sales staff in the Peterborough branch giving poor unsuspecting punters a complete load of flannel.

This might seem like an odd question, but does PC world have a variety of keyboards out on display that you can test? I find that most stores don't; and before I buy another keyboard, I wouldn't mind giving it a good thrashing to get a feel for it.

I wouldnt recommend any retailer (both online or retail) unless Ive actually had to use their after-sales service.

PC World might be cheap but I suspect it might be a nightmare if you have problems after your purchase...

On the contrary, I've found them to be very good. You just take whatever it is in and say "Oi Abdul, this is knackered, please replace it" and they do.

Back in the day I bought a Voodoo 1 from them and after about 9 months it died. I took it into the store I bought it from and had the aforementioned conversation with the "techie" on duty and he agreed to swap it but unfortunately the computer told him that they didn't have anything with that part number in stock so I should go and choose something of equivalent value. I went and chose a Voodoo 2 ( a nice upgrade at the time) and noticed that they did have the Voodoo 1 on the shelf under a different part number and at half the price. Kind of forgot to mention that to Abdul when I went back to the customer service desk

Re: PC World is great these days!

I was looking for an all in one printer for somebody and decided on the Epson DX8400. PCWorld don't do the DX8400 instead the have a very similar model, the DX8450. Speaking to Epson, eventually I managed to press their tech support into telling me that the DX8400 and DX8450 are the same and that the DX8450 is a DSG specific model.

I looked for the best price I could find and PC World were not as cheap on the DX8400 as some other places were and since the DX8450 is a different model number, no price matching was possible! Once I added P&P the online retailers were pretty close to the PC World store price so PC World got my business.

8450 has a black lid as opposed to a kindof dark blue IIRC, I got my 8400 from comet when it was £50 over a year ago, nice and cheap on cartridges too

They're £111 if you reserve the 4850 online, for the sapphire version. Not bad given you can collect.

A lot of big high street retailers do that specifically to prevent price matching - especially TVs...

P.S. Im glad to be wrong regards PC Worlds service, Ive bought a few things from them but always when Ive known I wont have issues...
