    Help on external HD dilemma!

    Hey everyone,

I have pretty much run out of internal HD space and im now looking for an external solution to give me more space.

I am looking for a minimum of 1TB, and I dont want to spend an absolute fortune, but im looking for peoples opinions here. Im not necessarily going to be needing to move the HD. The information will be for personal use so does not need to be used as network storage. Preferably fanless/no noise but not something thats going to overheat in the near future.

I bought a Maxtor One Touch III a few years ago but it has died on me recently.

    Here are my q's...

    1) What exactly is DAS and is it an option I should consider, and is it cost effective?

    2) Either way, are there any external HDs you would recommend?

    All opinions welcome

If I had to guess because I'm so lazy I cant even be bothered to google it.. DAS would be Desktop or Direct Attached Storage lol I.e. not network attached (NAS). Just means, esata, firewire, USB etc..

I would get a western digital MyBook or just buy a cady and WD caviar green

Looks like it is a WD green power 1tb drive in these, good price, and a good drive.

It you don't want to move it I would buy an internal HD. i will never forget i borrow once my girlfriend external HD (we live together so it was from one room to another) and it was accidentaly knocked out of the table and landed on the carpet and guess what, broked down and lost all her music collection so she was not very happy at all. Luckily had 3 years warranty and lacie repaired it for free but she still remembering 3 years after (women, I know )

Re: Help on external HD dilemma!

Got a WD MyBook here, silent when idle, only slightly noisy when spinning up - plus it powers on and off automatically with my computer (great as I have it pretty much hidden away).
