    Samsung optical drives

    Hello:

My NEC ND-4570A does not want to burn anymore, so I thought I would buy a new drive, a SATA and, why not, a Samsung (never had a bad Samsung product).

But when I look at reviews and such, and compare with what DVD writers Samsung offers on its drive page, I wonder why Samsung only offers some SE-... and SH-S... in the 100 series. I wonder this because SH-S... in the 200 series seem to be rather common.

Now, having said that, what SATA DVD writer (or COMBO?) would be a good choice at this time?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Hans L

I'd go for a Pioneer. I have several Pioneer products and they are all very well made. Their latest SATA burner is 22x and can be had for under £18!

    Re: Samsung optical drives

Can't vouch for their internal drives but I do have a slimline external DVD Writer for the netbook and it's used constantly and never once gave me a single problem. Tempted to buy the bigger 22x external samsung burner for the shuttle and get rid of the internal DVD Writer I have now to create more space in the shuttle for cooling

    Roadie and Grey, thanks.

I've heard and read many good things about Pioneer, and I will certainly take a look at them, and also the Samsungs. Do you have model designations/numbers for the ones you recommend? (I am a little challenged .)

I'd recommend the Sony Optiarc drives, the new AD-7240S is highly rated. I have one myself and it tests very well.

    Re: Samsung optical drives

The model numbers I use are the following:

    Netbook:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Samsu...lus-TRU-DIRECT

    Just bought for the Shuttle:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Samsu...-with-Software

Glad I did go external now as there are a number of PC's in the house all with older DVD Writers so this will do the job. Also removed the old NEC 16x sata burner from the shuttle and the temps dropped 5c so looks like the caddy in the shuttle gets in the way of the cpu and the dual slot 8800GTS.
