Question ATI X1800XT - what should I pay?

    Hey all,

I was just looking to upgrade from my old 9800 Pro to a X1800XT (have a new PCI-E mobo now), but there are quite a few of these cards about by different manufacturers and really differing prices (from £195 to £295).

So my question is, what should I be paying for a 256Mb X1800XT or a 512Mb X1800XT? Cooling solution is not important since I will probably replace the heatsink with an Accelero. Also, can anyone recommend any online retailers/brands that I should be looking for?

Thanks a lot for your help

You'd probably not notice the benefit of 512mb at 1280x1024 or similar, but anything upwards, the RAM starts to make a difference - at 1920x1200, it'll be worth the extra.

I'd imagine it would be the XL you've seen for £200 rather than the XT (making that fullfat offer above a bit more appealing).

£295 seems extortionately steep for an X1800XT though. The X1900XT are retailing for less than that...

£165 is the lowest I've seen for the 256mb variant, £235 for the 512mb (too much difference IMHO), both from that not-very-popular store beginning with an "O".

Nice to get the 512mb version, I reckon a lot of new games will require 512mb to play full textures, GRAW does and even Doom 3 needs it so good buy!

For those that are interested, I went for the 512Mb version that fullfat was selling on the trade forum. Me =

Nice buy. I just got one of these puppies recently, very nice. Hot as hell tho, I'm planning on watercooling.
Bought mine in the US, £160 for the 512MB. It's so cheap over there!

I was gonna try an Accelero 2 first to see if it can get the temps down a bit, then maybe w/c if that doesn't help.

Only thing to bare in mind with the Acceleros are that they blow the hot air straight down onto the motherboard, which can cause issues if one of the chipsets are sitting directly under it.

Personally I went for a VF900 this time - a bit of a shame really, because the previous generation of Arctic Coolers were pretty much unstoppable, doing a stunning job, silently, while exhausting all the hot air straight out the back of the case.

Definatly, The last generation arctic coolers were excellent, They had the looks, the quietness and the throwing hot air straight out the back.

    New ones are crap tbh

I just ordered an accelero to replace my vf900 as the vf900 was not as quiet as i had hoped in windows. It may perform better but the fan speed wont vary automatically like the stock cooler or accelero so when its stuck on full speed its too noisey for me
