£350 to spend on cpu & Mem ...But WHICH???

Hi after nearly buying a 3700 san diego a month ago i was wisely persuaded to wait a while for the price drops but the money is Burning a hole so i have £350 to spend on Mem / Cpu to go with my Dusty boxes of 1.Asrock dual sata-pci/agp , 2.Tsunami Case, 3.Hiper 680w PSU which i purchased after xmas! So Guys what is it to be this time the 3700 or maybe something else ps advise!

ps I use Pc mainly for photo/Video editing (Adobe cs2) sometimes Games (battlefield/Cod2/ HL2) and dont really want to OC but you never know i could be tempted if the performance/cash difference was major.

Still a good move. I may sell my system soon when Conroe comes out.

Surely selling after conroe comes out will lower your resale value.

idd it would be silly to sell your AFTER conroe is released... everything decreases ion value too fast, youd lose more money on tht CPU and ram u got if u sell afta conroe

You can use Intel 975X boards - but not all of them, only the ones recently released that say they support Conroe.

I think you can also use the new 965 series.

nVidia are releasing their nForce 590 chipset as an Intel Edition, that looks very promising (I was going to buy that with an AM2 processor but am waiting for Conroe now). There aren't any of these boards to buy yet.

I don't think any of these come with AGP, in fact almost nothing does now, that ASRock board is a bit unusual in that regard.

Conroe better than X2 - you could search for the benchmarks that Anandtech, Hexus and others have. But bear in mind it's not actually out yet.

    Hope that helps

As fast as conroe is now, I really fail to see the reason I would actually sell all my bits and getting it.. both my systems is fast enough for anything now, none of which twitched even one bit and is mighty fast for anything I'm doing now.. Ok, maybe I could go with a little speed bump, but changing everything jsut to throw another 10 minutes off my quant sims is just too much trouble over nothing..

If gaming is concerned, dropping, £200 for a CPU + £160 for a motherboard.. + another £110 for some better quality 2GB DDR2.. which incidently equals a whopping £470 wont give me £470 worth of framerate.. I'd rather spend it on a faster video card.. my CPUs are mighty fast to remain not SOO CPU limited for another generation or 2.. this may nto give me £470 more framerate.. but at least its better value than the CPU combo..

Don't mind me, just my 2 pence for anyone who's just thinking of upgrading..
    Me want Ultrabook

I agree if someone already has an Athlon 64 x2 then it wouldn't really be worth upgrading for a while yet. My situation is a bit difference in that I had a Sempron 2800+ on the socket 754 which overclocked nicely but my DFI motherboard was playing up and I had to RMA it. I sold that off along with my 6800LE which was struggling with Oblivion. Its been 6 weeks but I think I can wait another two weeks for my upgrade.....two months without gaming!
