Question Laptop advice please; Advent any good?

Hey there, been a while since I posted but I'm in the market for a laptop and I'm pretty much out of the loop.

I have my eye on this one: http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/product/seo/873552

It's pretty much the spec I'm after and the price certainly looks good, but for some reason the Advent brand is raising a red flag and I can't put my finger on why. Can anyone offer any advice on this brand? Personal experiences would be great.

Alternative products would be appreciated too, I just need it for basic Windowsy stuff like web browsing and email but I'd also like to play the odd game here and there... nothing that the ATI X200 couldn't handle though.

    Thanks a lot.

Advent are generally a bit crap - they're a budget brand that use OEM components from a variety of sources.

If you look in the Bargains forums, there's an Acer there being sold by Comet for £319. I'm sure you could up the spec if you needed to.

Are they really unreliable then? Or do they just feel cheap and nasty?

I will admit I was a bit wary with this brand. They've not got better with time then?

My mate has one, piece of junk to be honest. He even has to stand it on a pile of books as the design is so flawed that without standing on something, it will just crash due to overheating after 20 minutes.

Very poor battery life on it too, as most cheap laptops (especially of old) don't use mobile processors (because of the extra cost) so their battery consumption is huge.

Personally, you can't fault Dells, out business use Dells (I have to support them) and they're pretty steady machines. Rarely have any issues. The new D620's we have are superb, widescreen and dual cored, rapid.

Same, bought my mam a 12" Advent (bargain, £299 for a 1.6ghz Centrino, 512mb, shiny screen) a while back and not had a single problem. Battery still lasts for at least 3.5 hours. Had an Advent PC for at least 4 years and never had a real problem with that either, only things that went wrong were down to user error.

Advent laptops are just rebadged laptops from other companys (just as most laptops are) so the best thing would be to try and find out who makes that particular advent model.

I got a advent laptop which I still use which was a rebadged asus laptop.

    Nice!

Mostly they are cheap and cheerful - often makes like Medion, who are a big german supplier. Don't expect a great deal of refinement or compactness, but they are well spec'd for the price.
