Review :: Steelkeys 6G Gaming Keyboard

Why on earth would anyone want to sit down and game at their testosterone powered gaming machine using a keyboard with more bounce than Jordan on a trampoline? The words ‘soft and spongy’ are only good if used in the same sentence as the words ‘Kiera’ and ‘Knightley’...

So the Steelkeys 6G Gaming Keyboard could be the answer, a no-nonsense keyboard for the gamer which you can read all about in this Steelkeys 6G Gaming Keyboard Review.

Interestingly, according to SteelSeries, the Steelkeys 6G is reinforced with metal bars inside the casing to make it extremely durable, meaning you can throw it in your bag for a LAN and not have to worry about pulling out a busted ‘board with the keys dripping off. However, SteelSeries have asked that I limit my testing to gaming use as they’d seen the Corsair Destructive Testing videos on HEXUS.tv and really didn’t want me to sod up their review sample.
    ROFL!!.

I can't find a RRP or any other price mentioned in the review. We need to know if it's value for money really.

    £56

How about some reviews of more affordable 30 quid 'boards, like the G11 or eclipse 2?

I have a G15 and a logitech media elite(never found anyone who doesn't like this keyboard), the G15 is sitting behind my monitor and has been for a long time. As it's just horrible to type with. So I always end up coming back to the Elite.

I think this has gone too far in the other direction. A few simple media keys would make a lot of difference.

    Those were my thoughts too.

As a standard keyboard, used for nothing but gaming, the Steelkeys 6G is great, especially for games that require multiple keypresses, such as any RTS or even flight sims.

But as a more general purpose keyboard the lack of any frills makes it a hard choice to buy if you want some media functionality.

I think if it had a USB hub and headset ports along with basic media controls (I never use my Elites mail, webcam, msn etc buttons, I just use that media panel) it'd be pushing to take the place of my Elite as the key response is much nicer.

That said, for the gaming rig, which is only ever used for games and nothing else, it's a better keyboard that the similar RAPTOR K1 and it's claimed durability makes it ideal for the LANer who likes to take his own kit along.

Same here. The media keys are great for gaming. I cant sit through any RTS without music on. The flatter profile of the Elite is good for FPS's I find too.

Problem with 'gaming' keyboards is not many computers are used just for gaming. Even 'gamers', like many people on here, still do a huge amount of typing.

If logitech released a G15 with Elite keys I'd buy it straight off.

    - Poor G15 give it some use. Yes they take a day or two to get used to granted but perservence is the key and I happily use mine all night long *trumpet* ( Sorry - only a few will get that joke ) without issues and regularly use the marco keys for windows commands.

I like the G15 it's a great keyboard I used it for months, I started using my Elite when I had to RMA it. So much nicer if you type a lot.

Never realised the elite was such a popular keyboard, i got one a while back because it had the media buttons and was cheapish.

Never had any problems with it, found the buttons slightly light when i got it (Using a standard dell one before) but that doesnt take long to adapt to. Love the media keys though, use them all the time and theyre great when youre in full screen apps.

I currently use an MS ergonomic 4000 as my previous logitech ultra-x was leaving me with painful wrists.

However I loved my cherry keyboard back when I had a pc-xt with an oh so fast nec v20 at 8mhz.

How does this compare to the MS keyboard considering the only "extra" key I use is for ms calc and vista hardly makes it hard to fire up calc.exe.

It's not hard in XP either, just bring up the run box and type calc, I don't even need to type calc 'cos that whats always there

I think the gold connectors is an absolute gimmick though, it makes hardly any difference to anything, let alone keyboard, not once have I pressed a button and it failed to register due to too much resistance (apart from the time when I spilt a carton of orange juice on my keyboard, and every time you hit a key the keyboard went crazy), and it adds so much to the price of they keyboard.
