NVIDIA tightens stranglehold with intro of GeForce 8M mobile GPUs

NVIDIA's stranglehold over AMD/ATI looks set to tighten with today's introduction of the GeForce 8M Series graphics processors for portable PCs.

This powerful, yet power-saving, new-generation family should start appearing in a handful of computers in the next few days but be offered in a wide range before the end of the month.

From the demos we've seen, GeForce 8M Series is set to have the same impact on mobile computing as recently-launched NVIDIA PCI Express GPUs promise for desktops.

    More.

Disappointing that things top out with the 8600M GT being listed as 'performance'.

A 8600GTS desktop card probably couldn't compete with NVIDIAs GeForce Go 7900GS and GTX, let alone this lower clocked mobile part.

Guess we'll have to wait for 65nm parts before seeing a real performance DX10 mobile chip from NVIDIA.

these aren't the gaming gpu's though..it's not really their purpose.

You can play CS on a go 7400 @ 1280 x 1024 at around 50 - 60fps which is fine for a laptop so these should be ok for the very portable laptops.

Or (as has been said elsewhere) just get out a DX10 part without sucky drivers - for that is one area where nVidia couldn't even _find_ the roost right now.

    I'm not bitter, i'm just a 8600GTS owner

If you look on their site, they're not listed as Enthusiast, so it looks like the gaming versions will be released later.

Hence I said maybe we'll have to wait for 65nm parts

    G80 (8800) is a 90nm part while G84 and G86 are 80nm.

I'd expect to see an enthusiast level part built on 65nm with features closer to that of the G80, perhaps tied in with a refresh of the high-end desktop parts on the smaller process.

God damn, ATI better have something magic up its backside... And from recent "leaks" I would have to assume not so, although I believe nothing until a real review has been conducted by a reputable source (*hint* *hint )

You may not have to hold your breath too long!

But, if I say any more here at the moment, I'm going to have to kill you and everyone else who reads this thread (these embargoes just seem to get more strict all the while!).

Once the new Intel chipsets come out with their new processors and the new graphics cards have settled in, it will be time to upgrade my laptop - so maybe in about a year and half then.

Just been reading about the centrino pro..sounds like seriously good stuff. Got it's own firewall.. lol

Sounds like a perfectly polished mobile chip. Looking forward to some reviews.

I've been waiting for my new laptop too. Centrino pro and one of the lesser 8m's will be my choice.

ATI have become complacent being at the top for so long they have forgotten what work actually means... hope they get their act together cause I don't like the prospect of owning a Nvidia card with their ****ty drivers.

I still find it hilarious how ppl are constantly slating the nVidia drivers.

I have had an 8800GTX running under Vista x64 since the day I could buy one in the UK, my only issue was a BSOD in certain areas in WoW and that was fixed extremely quickly with a driver update....

Now, when I compare that to running my old Crossfire setups under WinXP64, where either the drivers failed to install, refused to acknowledge a second card or made you chase your tail trying to configure which port was the primary monitor, I personally am dumbfounded.

Now, I'd like to think that the majority of the issues currently are due to the transition of ATI>AMD......lets hope they get their act together soon as I want an 8800 for the 2nd PC but want the prices to drop first

Well, it's only because they suck Oh, and it's now six months since Vista was done. Currently i'd like to set fire to my 8600GTS - card aimed squarely at HTPC folk and completely incapable of doing the job

Since nVidia have launched their new flagship model at $1000 they've no need to lower their prices - particularly if the ATI product isn't as fast/faster. The reality (for all of us) is that we want ATI/nVidia to be neck and neck (whether you prefer one or the other).
