HELIOS has customised a version of Linux to allow its server suite to run on the PS3 hardware.The free installer will be available from the UK distributor's website from 1st of June.

Why would you do that? I can't understand why people do that sort of thing. I would be laughed out of the office/pub for doing something so geeky!

Why not ? Its a pretty powerful processor and hard drive can be increased. Its reasonably quiet and can be stood up to not use too much space.

why not indeed!!!some people wouldnt do that because they dont understand the first thing of what advantages it could bring..the ps3 is nowhere near showing its true colours and all these small things matter.

Why not build a cheap server with larger hdd's for less than the ps3? You could then play games on your ps3! Seems impractical to me when servers don't need power as much as storage space.

Depends on the server; some ARE just storage boxes, but a lot of servers run applications (database servers, messaging/collaboration servers etc) and some may well be in use purely for hard number crunching. In the latter role a farm of PS3s might be very useful.

Grid computing seems appropriate (a la folding@home), anything over and above then its just playing with the tech, not genuinely useful.
