Truble up t’North – Brain Training gets the Watchdog treatment

The Nintendo DS game, Brain Training, received the Nicki Campbell ‘Watchdog’ treatment on Monday evening following a complaint from a viewer upset that the voice recognition system on the hand-held doesn’t recognise her strong local accent.

Saw this - and what a bunch of horse poo.

Still the stuff about phone companies nicking your line was pretty shocking - happened to my folks a few years back.

Basically, atm phone companies can simply poach your phone line - the first you know about it is when your existing provider sends you a letter saying they're sorry to see you go etc.. Suddenly you're with a new provider and you have to go through a stack of hassle (and or loss of phone/broadband) to sort it out.
It's called 'phone slamming' and it's because salesmen are on commission (yay)

Ridiculous really, I've had this problem with my Midlands accent. You just need to speak more clearly and pronounce your words correctly and it's okay. 5 minutes of fame if you ask me.

... We watched this last night, I was more annoyed with Cambell referring to the Nintendo DS as 'DS Nintendo' in the filmed report. All a bit of bollocks really - I took it as a light hearted skit, any accusation of discrimination could not be serious.. (could it)?

Brain Training.... does that not include your accent?

All they are doing is force people to speak clearly in a fasion it can understand.

i'm from manchester (dont have the textbook oasis stereotype accent) but still, i just found with alot of games in the past wether it be Socom, Rainbow six 3, SWAT and other old style mic command games - just speak clearly and pronounce your words properly - its really not so hard to resolve, i agree with two previous comments too - it IS just a 5 minutes of fame angle AND for the budget and air time the program is on you would think they'd name the console correctly.

Re: Truble up t’North – Brain Training gets the Watchdog treatment

Hate to think how the Scots or Irish are getting on with it. Accents are quite strong in my whereabouts. When you listen to other people in my area though it just sounds normal to our ears, however listening to someone from the south and it can be quite hard to understand at times.

Trying to incorporate regional dialects from our versatile country would be really hard to do. One of my daughters has trouble with Nintendogs and the voice recognition, its pretty difficult putting a voice on and keeping it that way when you are playing the game. Half the time the game doesn't pick up on it at all!

Funny thing is, I'm from London originally and have quite a Southern accent. My daughter, on the other hand, has a pronounced Northern accent already. It can be quite fun watching the results - she's got one of Amazon.co.uk: Lucky The Incredible Wonder Pup: Toys & Games , and has now trained it to respond to "Loockeh"...

indeed, all it takes is a bit of careful pronunciation rather than flapping about like some disadvantaged plonker...'tis only a game after all.
