A sad day indeed.
PC gaming seems to be losing all the people who used to pioneer it. ID, Epic, valve and now Crytek. Wonder who`ll be next.
ITs a sad state of affairs PC gaming used to lead the way in technology and now it seems that we are being left with conversions now.
Surely things like steam are helping to combat Piracy though?
I'm sure the freedom brigade will still pipe up that piracy has no effect on PC sales..
A steam only release might help counter it, but then you also lose a huge amount of retail sales, so you're still not selling as much.
Supporting consoles too makes financial sense - sales on those formats aren't just down to less piracy but to the user base overall and the price of entry (by comparison). Loved crysis (still playing it with 3rd party levels) and bought it. A lot of people did regardless of those who didn't.
I think if the PC market is going to survive Then Things like Steam are the future.
I don't think it's going anywhere - it's not like the console market where if it doesn't perform the platform will disappear. People will carry on buying PCs for all the other things they do (even if they own consoles) in addition to gaming. The market for games will therefore always exist for it and with the closeness of formats (the 360 platform is very similar to develop for and there are a number of cross-platform game engines to choose from) it's nowhere near as hard to develop titles as it once was.
I like steam but i buy a lot of games on physical media as it's cheaper (mostly).
Fairly predictable really.
Piracy is not the only problem with pc gaming. It's the constant need to upgrade so you can play more graphically pretty games that is the main problem - I mean who even now has a system that can play crysis, even on medium settings? I know I certainly don't. So games developers could make games that run on lower spec pcs, but then nobody would bother upgrading and we'd be left with a platform that never moves forwards.
People have predicted the death of pc gaming before and it's never come to pass, but you get the feeling it is in intensive care and needs something or someone to get it off of life support - Microsoft maybe?.....Hmm
Sorry for the bad analogy.

Nothings changes though - far cry killed systems on release too - it's because crytek like to push the curve. PC games tend to be a elitist lot though - and can't handle trimming down settings on their medium-spec hardware. That's the difference between crysis and (say) half life 2 which as a less complex engine (at least graphically) and therefore ran better on more systems.
But yeah, PC gaming is dying - again. I'm sure i'll be reading about it's impending death in another 3 years - again.
Thats part of the problem now though. Although the market is healthy its because of games like peggle and other casual games. You think back a couple of years and you couldnt move without hitting a PC exclusive game now though everything is console conversions.
Some people do like to own the physical game but if its an option between the AAA titles being an after though for the PC and having to download it it but it being pc-exclusive I know which id prefer.
There are sitll a few PC only games on the horizon Sim3 though be interesting and IF WIll Wright manages to pull off spore its gonna be good. ITs just a shame that all the FPS games coming out now seem to think the consoles are a better idea than the PC where the best control system is availabble
I've never really seen the draw of exclusivity to be honest. Any studio worth their salt won't compromise one version for the sake of another in a meaningful way - as far as I'm concerned the bigger the total market for a game I'm interested in the better.
piracy is affecting the sales? I thought it's because the requirements are quite high for a majority which limits its market to small group. that and its boring single player...
don't see why it's a sad day if it goes to console what harm can it do. at least they'll be getting more money.
dam, thats just sad indeed. I didnt have time to read the article but does it mean crytek are not making pc games anymore? or just not exclusives, although its a major hit to the pc gamers (me ) i really hope some decent games come out soon. I hate piracy and the fact is they save people £10 or something, its common on consoles to but because the games are around £40 each compared to pc £20 they can live with it as the profits are huge(normally). The way i see the pc market going now is to just mmorpg's like WoW that are p2p which is just dire. Surely they can just add a cd key or something where you actually have to register for it when you buy it(online to) so that you could only play it if you bought it.
I dont mind steam etc but they are annoying were you dont get anything physical and the price is normally more then a retail version which is why i decide to buy online from play or even pcworld(price match makes em the best).
I sold my 360 because i got bored of the games as i paid £30 normally for a game that kept me entertained for about a month but i can get a pc game for £10 and keep me entertained WAY longer and i didnt have to pay any online fee's etc.
edit@ moogle, although its a mater of preference the single player is decent(imo) as its pretty indepth and reminds me of halo(enjoyment wise) and for once i enjoyed it without doing co-op or something that i have to do with every game if it has it.
I haven't bought it, as I don't own a rig capable of playing it a high settings yet. Maybe when the real next gen graphics cards come out I'll take a look.
Well Im about to upgrade my pc this week so going to buy it then
