Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

    In a month's time I'm upgrading from my £35 a month Three contract to a £15 a month 30-day T-mobile contract.

    And I'm keeping my phone.

    £75 a month? That's ridiculous.

The O2 exclusivity is a still a deal-breaker for me, largely due to the 18-month Orange contract I'm currently tied into.

Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

Well tbh those are surprisingly competitive. The £45 option gives you the 8Gb phone for free and unlimited data is more than most of the other operators give.

Afaik the only other operator to offer an unlimited data option is T-Mobile and their coverage is said to be abysmal.

I'm not interested in the iPhone myself but it's certainly a more attractive deal than the old one.
I'm getting an HTC TyTnII when my 3 contract ends in August and it looks like I'll be going to O2 for it because of the unlimited data.

Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

Whilst the O2 factor still kills it, and the fact you pay 30 quid a month for a pitiful amount of minutes/texts, it's a very good sign that Apple are finally honouring their prices worldwide.

Most people expected it to mean £199 in the UK, as with most Apple products. If this was shown across the board then Apple would be very competitively priced compared to other hardware products.

Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

I don't see why people dislike O2? I've found their coverage to be great, but their data dog slow.

T-Mobile and 3 will also do very good fair useage unlimited data.

I'm paying £25 a month for somewhere around 500/1000 min/text with unlimited data on T-Mobile atm.

The thing is they really got the price waaaay below what i was expecting, i remeber been shocked that people who in my mind can't really afford to spend £1.5k on a phone where buying them last year, at least this time the price point is remotely competitive.

What i think will stop this been a truely great phone (appart from the crippled, yet insecure OS) is the lack of GPS, and Video connectivity. Others offer the ability to use the phone for watching video on the go (streamed), and then hooking up pre-recorded content to a tv.

Still the price point isn't bad, i might actually consider one this time!

Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

The maximum price for the 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199.
Does this mean they can't charge more the ~£100 for the PAYG version...

I don't think its a matter of disliking O2, I think it just prevents people from getting an iPhone when they're tied into contracts with other providers.

Take me for example, I don't particularly want an iPhone, but if I did, I'd have trouble getting one. I'm in an 18 month contract with Orange - if they had the handset available, I could consider an upgrade. With it tied exclusively to O2, I'm buggered.

I was with O2 in its various guises all the way back to about '98/'99 (I can't remember when I got my first phone on Cellnet).

But last year I switched to t-mobile. Never really looked back to be honest. The data package was what swung it for me, but there are other benefits I didn't realise at the time. granted these are very specific to me. For instance they are the only operator that gives me a signal in the office. I get looks when me phone goes because no-one else can get a signal without walking out to the car park and doing the "signal shuffle" (where you shuffle about for 10 min trying to find the exact spot you get a bar or two). I can also call my parents in Angola on t-mobile, O2 won't connect me, even though they can phone me. T-mobiles roaming seems to be a bit better down here in Nigeria too, apparently they are the only UK operator to have a roaming agreement in Angola too.

Everyone has their favourite network, and their lest favourite.

I think you are reading far too much into that! That price will be for phones with a contract. Expect prices closer to the old iPhone prices, if not with a bit more on top!

At the cheap prices it is tied to a contract, so the phone will be activated in store only on an 18 month contract. Pay and go, who knows as O2 have not given any details yet. However expect a big mark up on those phones.

Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

O2's 3G Coverage is still pants, either they will need to massively improve it (they took little notice of Ofcom saying that so I doubt they will when Apple say it) or i'd expect to see the iPhone on maybe Voda and T-Mobile in short time as they have the best 3G coverage.

I don't think Apple would stand for their new baby dying on it's ar$e for the sake of a tie in to O2. Especially as they're now going for the business market too, they will need 3G coverage to be there and working if they stand a chance in that market.

    16gb 3G iPhone for £59?

Get to keep my existing 2G iPhone also?

Only two months into my current 18-month contract?

I've registered my interest for the next one. Am I the only one that thinks this is awesome?

Re: Headlines - O2 announces UK iPhone 3G pricing

I have an N95 8gb on O2 and I find the 3G and HSDPA coverage to be pretty good, up here in the North at least. Fair enough I never really travel far away from the city but I wouldn't expect to get 3G coverage from any provider out in the sticks anyway.
