Why does it always come as a surprise to people that the next generation of device is already in development?

I can garantee the next Xbox and PlayStation are in development too.

Re: Headlines - HD-enabled Wii next on Nintendo agenda?

    yeah, sounds about right.

I can't remember exactly which product it was, but i remember reading an article about the dev teams within Microsoft. They had several iterations of whatever product it was (could have been windows, could have been a server app, I can't remember) being developed at the same time. The article was about how the team working on the next release was merged with the release after that because they were making far better progress, so the version effectively jumped from (say) 3 to 5.

By all accounts it isn't uncommon for interim releases to be canned because the further out one is showing more potential.

Large R&D departments can also be working on several different possible next generation concepts at the same time, they need to get so far through development before they will have an idea how they perform.
