Hardly a new idea though is it? You could do this in Duke Nukem 3D as I remember it, my dad didn't bother though and I turned out alright.. right? *twitches*

Yeah, I remember this feature on the original Unreal too (and later versions of UT), you could change the 'gore level'. Not sure on the effects it had, since I never used it, but guessing it turns off the blood, and stops you from being able to blow people apart.

While putting in this feature may help please a few people, almost no-one will turn it on, more of a PR stunt I think.

Re: Gears of Wars 2 feature hints at future for violent videogames

As the above posters have said this is far from a new feature as duke 3d, Unreal tournament and (i think) shadow warrior had violence/content control.

If the system is like the one used in the good old days then it won't be used though unfortunately

    It's new for consoles right?

In fact, I'm surprised that it hasn't appeared in console games before.

Not sure, surely it has on at least one game on a console, not any that i can think of right now though...

If you don't count UT3 on the 360 (cant confirm that as i don't own it on 360)

PC UT series definitely had it though

Gears of Wars 2 feature hints at future for violent videogames
From the title of this thread I was hoping to see an article on how amazingly extra-specially ultra-violent Gears of War 2 was going to be.

    Meh.

I don't think so. If I recall correctly, a few of th earlier Mortal Kombat games had it to where you could reduce or turn off the blood (MK3/MK Trilogy most likely...maybe MKII as well ^_^).

And I know I've seen others with it too over the years. I think its a waste of the dev's time; no one will use it, and if Little Billy can't handle game violence, then don't let him play. Simple.

Mortal Kombat 1 on the sega megadrive did this in reverse.
It starts off as a cut down blood free game but you can enter a code to enable the full gory version which every kid i knew did (my self included)

I think the snes version replaced the blood with sweat, i could be wrong though....

it's not new and is quite ridiculous, I mean surely if people really believe that video game violence leads to real life violence it's a bit daft, like saying "oh it's fine to take a chainsaw to someone as long as you make sure it isn't to messy".
"The less you eat, drink and buy books; the less you go to the theatre, the dance hall, the public house; the less you think, love, theorise, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you save – the greater becomes your treasure which neither moths nor rust will devour – your capital. The less you are, the less you express your own life, the more you have, the greater is your alienated life, the greater is the store of your estranged being." Karl Marx

A non-violent violent game?.. That's retarded. Gore filters aren't anything new, they don't work, because nobody uses them. It's like listening to music with the right channel chopped off and bass frequencies canceled out.

Nah - it was replaced with polka-dot mushrooms, and weirdly some things that looked for all the world like green turtle shells.

Exactly, death without consequence. Just give them a flick knife in the game and it will be practice

They should make them so gory and disgusting that the simple thought of killing is gut wrenching to even the most savage among us

And then the person should confronted by all the corpses to understand the consequences.

I actually think if you make violence so over the top it becomes less disturbing and moves into cartoon territory, sthey should make games even gorier.

Er! The same premise certainly doesn't apply to movies. I remember watching a film called the Re-Animator with over-the-top gore. It made me physically sick.
