I guess anything above 4GB would be overkill for most users right now. But since I've already got 4GB of Platinum series from OCZ, it's good to know that, should I need/want to, I'll be able to crank that up to 12GB =)

It's not ridiculous if you actually use all that RAM...

For Joe Average it's a daft purchase... to someone who works with massive amounts of data, the people they mention above... £300 is a small price to pay.

It's got nothing to do with Vista...

Got 8GB myself, and it was only because of the ludicrously low prices and Vista's SuperFetch to be honest. It's not needed at all, but it's great to see pretty much every program open from RAM.

If you've a need for 16GB, chances are you'll be wanting ECC for a high-end workstation rather than your average desktop RAM.

Most current boards are advertised as only supporting 8GB, but whether that's true or just them covering untested set ups, I've no idea.

Same here, I upgraded a few weeks ago and flogged the 4GB I had in the forums. When running multiple VMs it's quite nice being able to allocate a couple of gigs here and there without hindering the performance of other applications I'm running concurrently.

Looking forwards to Adobe releasing CS4 with its 64bit support next.

64-bit operating systems are becoming more mainstream and finally enable user memory to shed the 2GB limitation of 32-bit OS.

Is he on about process limit versus OS? Hope so.

well, at home you could use them for running old OS's to play your favorite old games. Also, if a program won't let you open up more than one instance, and you absolutely *need* to open another instance of it, you can run it in a VM. I've done this with diablo 2, and it's much safer than downloading a crack

I'd say that's why he said "user memory" - he's talking about the user space/kernel space limits.
