This has been on for a while, but with the HD box you need to take a premium channel afaik...

Re: News - Sky halves the cost of its HD service

    £27 a month over 12 months = £324 + box @ £75 = £399 ---- £399 for what 3 HD channels !!

    Really

    Really...

Why do people spend such stupid money on HD, its not all that different. £400 different? I don't think so.

BT vision box upscales to 1080i and looks fantastic. I didn't have to pay for my box, I don't no 12 month subscription and viewing packages start at £6 per month... and I can watch things when I want........

Why do people still keep pumping money into sky and letting them rip you off. Come on, move over to a better value service.

19 now, 26 by the end of october.

I'm not going to say that it isn't expensive, but it is good. And the BT Vision box looks like youtube after Discovery in HD.

HD channels, on a full HD-TV, look absolutely stunning... and the difference between watching a program on the standard channel, then watching it on the HD version of the channel (i.e. Sky Sports, Discovery, History, NatGeo etc), is clearly obvious in most cases... and in some cases... night and day obvious

Re: News - Sky halves the cost of its HD service

I would love to get Sky HD but I have to be honest, we have SD here and the adverts are really starting to do my head in. Murdoch's got a bloody cheek to charge what he does and then advertise on top. I suppose the HD makes the adverts a little more bearable.. there may well be a large, HD TV here by Christmas so Sky HD would be nice... adverts aside, of course...

I'm tempted also by Freesat but don't think the platform is mature enough just yet but it's on the way and, presumably, is putting the wind up BSB somewhat.

To be fair - stunning i reserve for blu-ray 1080P - sky is 720 and heavily compressed by comparison.
I didn't think it worth the money (and still don't) but it's my opinion and nothing more.

The quoted £27 isn't just for the HD service, though. It includes free broadband and weekend calls.

They were in the 18-20mbs bitrate region until recently, but switched to new encoder and have recuced the bitrates to 12-15mbs, but they actually look very good considering.

And yes, Sky is certainly 1080i, though there might be the odd 720p thrown in there as they broadcast at whatever res the source content is in.

Also, if you can get the content onto your PC and play it that using an H.264 decoder with the de-interlacing turned off you'll get 25fps 1080p.
