4870 for £115
Its a knock on effect yes, but the 5000 series is also around the corner
"Wait for the 5000 series to show up"
It was complacent thinking about how the next generation was going to be so much better that made everybody so dissappointed when the HD 2900 showed up and was the same with the original Phenom
Base your buying decisions on what's available now, and for me that means that there £115 4870 (even if it is 'only' 512mb) is looking mighty tempting...
We've still not got any games that really take advantage of the features in a 4870 over say a x1950xt, so I don't think you're really shooting yourself in the foot if you went for a 4870 now. It's an amazing amount of power for the money, and the next generation of cards won't be absolutely required for quite some time yet.
and here's lil ol me who did a computer on a budget, trying to save as much as he could. i'll have to get a new power supply (and possibly motherboard - crossfire at 8x) to be able to crossfire now. aah well, thats what happens in the computer world, new stuff keeps coming out, prices drop, if you wait you can buy a much better one than you could have a month ago.:sigh smilie:
the moral of the story is - just buy what you can afford now and what youre happy with and live wth it! (or something like that )
'on a budget' and 'paying over the odds to run something with little real benefit like crossfire' don't normally go together stevie
*trys to think of point i was making - can't remember what it was, carrys on eating tea. hmm chocolate kaiser buns*
Though it is of benefit to those of us who use them for things other than gaming, such as scientific computing. Learning Stream and getting two 4850s was one of the best leaps forward I ever made in terms of throughput. It's a shame now that the 4870s are the same price as I paid for the 4850s. Mind you, I'm still a bit frustrated about the 150 squids I paid for 2GB DDR2 RAM back in Dec 2006, when I bought higher clocked 4GB DDR2 for just 38 the other week
Noooooooooes - just as I was thinking about selling my pair on and picking up something from nVidia...
that price is very temping
