just make sure you get the storage right!! , if you've got your SQL drives on SAN already its a lot easier as you could just present the drives to the VM's as RDM's

Yes, about 75% of our databases are spread across various SANs, so even the migration plan is starting to look surprisingly simple

very - p2v the OS portion of the VM , shut down physical , rezone SAN and present other drives , boot up virtual , eat cake

Planning to build the VMs (including SQL with a copy of master restored), detach databases from physical, present the SAN LUNs to the VMs and re-attach the dbs to the VM....then rename the servers.

Don't really want to get into P2V during a change window

that would work just as well and you'll have the advantage of a cliean built Server. only snag that comes to mind is if your system dbs are on the SAN as well.
