So the i7 870s is going to be slower than the i7 860? That numbering scheme makes sense then.

Ah, but it's going to be a *lot* more expensive, so in terms of pricing the numbering *does* make sense. No-one's going to spend more money on a lower-numbered processor, because we all know that the higher the number, the better it is

I believe the idea is to have a lower base clock so the powersaving stuff can reduce speeds even lower when idle, but to have a similar peak speed via turbo-boost or whatever. Still seems a bit iffy to me, but I think that's intel's plan.

no more 32nm parts? i would have thought that the i5 would have used 32nm

Have you got a link? I think that's the first I've heard of S series chips having a higher turbo boost relative to base speed.

oh right another "too expensive to be of any use" clarkdale (AMT KVM is alright but not worth it). I thought it was 45nm because of the GPU. Cheap 32nm is what's needed here (lynnfield type preferably) but that 45nm fab capacity has to be put to use somewhere i guess

Re: News - Intel to introduce Core i5 680 and Core i7 870s processors

The CPU *is* 32nm. The on-die northbr... sorry, GPU is 45nm.

I assume the new i7 is still on 45nm, as I'm pretty sure they could run a 32nm quad @ a higher clock speed than that while keeping the tdp down? As I understand it retaping from 45nm to 32nm isn't entirely straight forward, so while they've got 45nm capacity to use there's no good reason to transfer to 32nm wholesale - they'll move across a bit at a time.
