Can't help thinking that this is one of the areas that Apple got right - having the dock connection made possible useful stuff like those dual change n' play docks that let you connect your iPhone/iPod to an amp+speakers, charge it, and control it with a remote*.

(* I'm assuming that you'd want to use your X10 as an ersatz iPod)

Not that I'll be buying an X10 (or any Android phone) until Three get a sudden attack of sense and bring up the contract Internet limits to something a bit more realistic than the current 500MB.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

SE were doing that long before the iPhone.

The FastPort can be used for a bunch of stuff all at the same time. USB, charging, hands free and audio output.

HTC have also been using a very clever "dock" post for some time. The bonus of HTC's connector is that you can use a regular mini-USB cable for data and charging, or a special cable that includes hands free, audio output and in some cases video output. See here for details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Pro...rs_and_formats
