Re: News - Windows XP used by 74 per cent of businesses

Company I work for seem to be 99% XP based, with no signs of changing in the not to distant future.

Dad's company is likely to be changing to 7 when he replaces all the PCs & the server at the centre of the network. No immediate need to do so though - XP is still sufficient to do all he wants and the business needs.

Pretty much the same here, SP2 got phased out so only SP3 left.

No chance of getting W7 as of yet.

Migration will most likely kick start series of boring meetings, putting project team together, planning ehhh don't even want to think about it

Re: News - Windows XP used by 74 per cent of businesses

Were mainly on XP still at work, its not down to the machines not running it or other reasons like cost etc as were covered for it on our MS licencing.
The main thing that stops us is machines needing other software as well as XP.
Design department for instance, a change to 7 would mean new adobe creative suite, solidworks etc etc..
If its a normal office machine then they get 7, laptops get 7 as well..

Re: News - Windows XP used by 74 per cent of businesses

Most business don't need anymore than XP anyway because alot of them are still running old tech. Where my Dad works they've just cleared out a load of PC's which were the very first P4's Running XP Pro. Think they were Compaq's.

They were replaced with some new Core 2 Duo's from Dell and they all came with XP Pro. I think mainly because the Avanti system they run is quite out of date now and doesn't work on anything above XP anyway.

I like their waste IT policy too, they give the old PC's to the people that work for them providing there is no comeback on it. Have had several pretty decent PC's which I've given away to friends etc.

My work has only upgraded our pc's this year to Hp core2duo machines and downgraded the vista business liscence to XP pro. Really cant see us changing it for quite a long time yet.

They have upgraded to SP3 which is a good thing and finally IE8 (ide use firefox but the firewall doesnt like it )

Re: News - Windows XP used by 74 per cent of businesses

We've started to pilot some tests on 7, running in conjunction with the 99.999% XP base and unfortunately our BT provided firewall software doesn't (or didn't) work, so until that fix happens, our hands are tied. Couple that with the higher memory requirements of 7, and this turns into a much more costly exercise... upgrading the ram in hundreds of laptops, backing up the laptops on mass to prevent data loss, it's a tremendously time consuming and expensive exercise, let alone the license cost that 7 incurs.

Businesses are out there to make money and this is a hell of a hit for a company to take to change the fundamental os base of their users. Potential security risks further down the line are not enough to make an everyday average joe type company that makes things like mine change our OS.

We'll only move when there's a cost incentive/benefit or a significant risk that we can get a board of directors to panic enough to spend some money. Just because MS want us to change will not make something happen.

Face it. XP just works! Commercially our mantra (and everyone else I spoken to regarding this) reads "If it aint broke..."

Yup, still using XP + IE6 where I work. We simply can not change it. Several business critical apps have been designed especially for XP + IE6.

well apparently they are keeping windows xp as most people would not feel comfortable using a newer windows because they have gotten so used to it, not everyone is good with computers

My Dad works at a large NHS hospital which is still on W2K. I've a sneaking feeling (Probably wrong) that the whole NHS is still on it.

Re: News - Windows XP used by 74 per cent of businesses

most of the NHS computers do still run on Win2k

win7 will work most ok on 512mb of ram as i found out with my other laptop that seemed to work about the same when i pulled the 2gb out of it

win7 business or higher you can use XP mode as it is free but the system has to have an VT enabled CPU (that most Core2duo lack as they mark it as an performance feature that most mass payed for systems lack VT when systems was bought)

i agree most users are not so bright some times just the start menu been changed to an gem thows them off (why they put shutdown now in start menu as OEMs was complaining about users bugging them about how to shut down there systems as no one wants to use the Sleep option even thought Microsoft wants them to)
even in the VIP Microsoft event i was at lots of interesting stuff that you can do now with windows 7 and 2008 R2 server the logging side that can give the admins more info about whats happening per system (really need to read up on it and see if they have Fixed the despairing maped hard drives to an folder when been viewed over an network when using 2008 server with vista or win7)

if they are still running older dell systems with lower then 945 video cards (more so 8xx based chipsets) the systems must be replaced or add an video card used adding to cost
