Wonder how much the company lost on those two mobile devices they pulled.

Considering the massive marketing effort that went into Windows 7, I'm not surprised it's been such a success, and I'm sure thats contributed heavily!

Microsoft, apple and intel can waste money on flawed products and get away with it while smaller, hard-working companies who try to give us a good deal compared to the big guns (example AMD) can't make a single mistake without it costing them for years.

It's a really messed up state of affairs, with us (the consumer) 100% to blame.

We're not to blame, Windows (despite it's flaws) is the most suitable OS for 90%+ of home and business users. Compatibility, a huge eco-system and very long term support compared to others. Especially in business the Windows Server, Active Directory & Windows Pro desktop is a powerful setup with a lot of supporting technology. Windows Server 2008 R2 is genuinely very good and continues to improve (SP1 due soon).

So we're not always to blame, we just bought the best thing on offer.

Yes but our refusal to branch out and actually give the little guys a chance is hurting us in the long run.

I very much doubt the majority of us would even notice the difference if we bought AMD instead of intel for example. It's to our advantage to bring all of these companies closer to parity instead of supporting a few huge ones that are basically monopolies and wasting our cash - or even worse sitting on $billions doing nothing much with it because that's exactly what Microsoft, intel and apple are doing.

Its the old "buy crap, help the underdog" argument again.
AMD get my money for their products that match the price/performance that I want, as do Intel. Why should anyone do anything else unless they are a fanboy?

Because if AMD go out of business, you can kiss goodbye to EVER getting another Q6600-type cpu at that price. Is that really hard to understand, or do you think intel would give you that sort of chip at that price again with no competition?

    Dear oh dear.

It's listed as a $240million write off apparently.
