Re: News - Catalyst 10.9 drivers released

I tried this and it brought my entire computer to a halt mid install (Athlon X2/780G/HD 3200), forcing a hard restart. It was probably just because I had too much going on while I was trying to update, but Windows certainly wasn't happy about the procedure. Restarted (with no video drivers installed) and installed from the package downloaded from AMDs site without any problems.

Have yet to test it on my other AMD PC, but I'm sure it was just a random hiccup. This is also the same computer that refuses to play flash after a video-driver update, so its probably a fluke down to my specific configuration.

UPDATE: Nope, other system (PII/790X/CF HD 4870) installed with no problems...other than the lack of custom install.

Re: News - Catalyst 10.9 drivers released

the Catalyst Install Manager launches as normal, though unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an option to select an advanced or custom install.
Gave it a whirl last night but was very annoyed when that happened. Ended up downloading the normal drivers so I could uninstall/reinstall with custom options (no email opt-in etc). Won't be bothering with that again!

    the drivers download to

    <steamdir>\steamapps\common\amd driver updater, <version here>
in my case: D:\Steam\steamapps\common\amd driver updater, vista and 7, 64 bit

so if you dl the drivers via steam and cancel the install, when you run the setup.exe from here it will have the usuall options (custom / express).

You could do that...but what would be the point? The idea is that it's easier to do it through Steam. If I have to dig around in the steam folders to find the installer, I'll just go to the AMD site and download it to my desktop.

*Sigh* Can someone wake me up when ATi stop releasing half arsed drivers?

Only ever had a couple of issues with nvidia in all the years of using them, yet only two amd drivers are bearable for me to use.

What's the problem ? Works fine for me.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Well I had pinstripe crashes pre 10.6 (not to mention the other bugs!), and I had issues with bc2 with 10.6, 10.7 is the only one without an annoying problem in the last year, 10.8 and 10.9 reset my HDMI scaling to -15% every boot/every wake from standby/every time my monitor turns off.

I had loads of problems when I first installed Cat10.5/10.6 (I can't remember which) I just ran the driver cleaner and reinstalled and It's been OK since.
I hear what you're saying about teh quality of ATI drivers though. They have been unacceptably low quality for a few months now.

Re: News - Catalyst 10.9 drivers released

Only issue I have had with Cat drivers since 10.4 when I first got the ATi card was the 10.7 drivers borking Peggle. The hotfix for 10.9 (here are the 10.9a hotfix drivers http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles...109Hotfix.aspx ) these finally fix the PopCap issue of black screens due to 3d acceleration.

Tbh I heard all the horror stories of ATi drivers which put me off for years but I am happy enough, never once had an issue with drivers and I just install the latest update over the last one without an issue.

Re: News - Catalyst 10.9 drivers released

Nvidia are just as capable of breaking things as AMD. Remember when Vista first came out, the basic Nvidia drivers included with Vista actually stopped many systems from booting. As problems go, that was quite a big one.

It ebbs and flows. All GPU chip-makers have issues with something or other, otherwise there'd only be driver updates for new products. It's finding the one which works for what you do.

My problem with AMD drivers the move away from unified drivers again. Just release a package containing everything - 2 if you do want to separate mobile from desktop... not having to use drivers from 2008 because Acer or someone has opted out of using the standard monthly update packages.
