fingers are being crossed that it is just a Galaxy-family phone but with google doing the software rather than samsung, so us with galaxy s's can hop on too.

I thought Galaxy S also has hardware issues as well as software issues. I have read more than once that the wifi chip was the root of many problems on the handset. Samsung were struggling to get software to work correctly with the new chip in these handsets.
I am surprised that google would go with Samsung considering HTC's success with the original Nexus and other android handsets.
I think there are way too many rumours and not enough facts to believe the follow up to the Nexus is made my Samsung.
